does anyone feel that acidity can cause a panic attack???

I am new here. I have been suffering from acid reflux disease for 3 1/2 years. I have been to hte ER 4 times since 2000, thinking I am having a heart attack and feeling strange, disconnected, unreal. The Dr.s say "reflux, dont drink coffee and take your protonix". I don't get heartburn anymore, but these strange little sensations or moderate pains that trigger a panic attack. My feet and hands tingle, short of breath, etc. I have never passed out, my heart is fine, but I keep thinking "this is it". I have a two year old daughter and another on the way, I HAVE to get this under control. I began drinking heavily after my first couple attacks, the booze made me just numb enough to not have any. I quit drinking a couple weeks ago and feel better physically, but mentally I am scared that I am going to have another attack. (scared of being scared?) It is interesting to me the number of people posting here that have acid problems, there is definitely a connection between acid trouble and panic/anxiety. Reading posts on this board has helped me be more informed, I dont know if I will seek medical help from my Dr. or not. Any advice on drugs for this condition. Thanks, eric

hi venik..i used to have the same problem and did consult my doc about it..she,s really cool(luckily)and said i dont need to do any tests..my eating habits were wrong..she said i should change this and see if i get better and then decide about tests,i did get better..i basically changed the amount of food i eat at every meal..check if you are staying hungry for more than 3 hours at a stretch?and then eating heavy meals?this does cause the acid levels to rise.basically try eating smart, that is...lighter meals every 3 hours..dont let your stomach stay empty for more than 3 hours eat 2 biscuits if you have to..this wont let the acids build in your tummy...try it..hope it helps..do let me know..love..sanju

this is for lory...i think you should talk to your husband and explain the problem to him..people who dont know about panic attacks do behave like the ones getting them are wierd..i know..i used to think my mom is wacko till i got my first attack..i think its very important to have people close to you be a bit educated about this problem..and try and be strong..we can be cured..i know it..i feel it..take care..love...sanju

Hi Garm. At our sister site, www.stopsmokingcenter.net members agree that smoking is used to mask emotions. While it may distract, it doesn't stop the thoughts that cause people to light up. When people quit, they find that they have to learn to deal with them in a new way.

I too get that tendency to burp a lot. It is roughly annoyingly, especially when it's the type of burp that gets halfway caught and burns a little bit. That really sets the anxiety in motion. I have actually found that smoking helps my anxiety because it takes my mind off of everything, and i have until recently been having panic attacks daily, but never when i have one "lit up". Not that i'm endorsing smoking, it's just my experience of it. As for acidity, i eat a lot of Pizza ROlls and pizza, and i guess that could be a cause of the burpage.

Hi, I thought I was the only one that has this happen. When I start to panic my stomach fills up with air and I have to hide so I can burp. This continues until I can calm down. I have my first appointment with a psy DR. next week. I am having panic attacks almost daily now. They started again when I lost my job of 25 years, and have to find another job. I had an interview and couldnt go, I freaked. I feel so ill my heart races and pounds. I get very depressed, cant sleep or think clearly, I cant express myself, and worry, worry, worry. My husband is a very emotionaly strong man. He thinks Im making much of this up and have become a hypochondriac. He tells me to just get over it. He hates weak emotional people. I need his understanding but dont know how to communicate with him without sounding like an emotional psyco.I have hid this problem from everyone but cannot hide any longer. Lory
