I quit for 6 months back in 1995. And even after 2 or 3 months, I still "wanted" a cigarrette...and even worse, I had several vivid dreams about lighting up! The nicotine was long-gone from my system...but the mental association is very strong...perhaps even as strong as the physical addiction itself. As of last night I'm on round #2, and going to kick this thing for good. Hang in there! Say this prayer: God bless you and keep you...far, far away from me. I've said that prayer under my breath many times in the last 12 days.... and then I laugh at myself. It helps to keep your sense of humor, too... Thanks for the input on my "rant". I feel a little sheepish about it now, more like a petulant kid than a sensible grandmother. I do appreciate the judgement-free zone that this forum provides, however. Thanks again. People around me are saying "The nicotine is out of your body by now..what are you talking about?" or "Your're making it worse by talking about it." if I mention I'm having a crave. It's like somehow I'm a lesser human being because I still have these very compulsive feelings. Thanks for this site, because I realize there are a lot of people who deal with the same responses. I just wish I knew something to say back to them that didn't sound like "f... you!", if you know what I mean. (Non smokers can be supercilious). No, it's not all in your head. Well, maybe it is, maybe it is in all of our heads. Either way, cravings are real. Are any of these people smokers or ex-smokers. You are in about the same spot I am in on my quit and I think this may be the toughest spot yet. Stay close to this site because these people know what your feeling. Hi Maggie I'm glad you posted. People who have not been addicted and quit will not have any comprehension of how difficult this can be just as they don't understand why we want to "celebrate" every milestone. If people ask, I don't offer a whole lot of info...(i.e. This has been a really good week or the last couple days were rough) then I leave it at that. When I want to rant, rave or pat myself on the back, I come here because this is the place where I KNOW people understand what I am experiencing. But I've got to admit...there has been the odd moment when I would like to use a few choice words........ Congrats on 24 smoke-free days! From Newbkr: "While it's true that nicotine and its metabolites are out of the body within about 72 hours, smoking alters the number and distribution of the acetylcholine receptors within the brain and the re-establishment of normal neurotransmitter function takes significantly longer." ----- Love it! :) Thanks! NMC (64 days, still craving ....) Hi Maggie: Personally I am a big fan of the "f" word. It's quick and dirty and if someone is interested in taking me on with words well, hey, if the shoe fits. Having said that, we are not all alike and some us are more mature than others so for a more calming solution - perhaps this will help you. I am not an expert so this is just an idea - I hope it works for you. I find cravings are just as much of a friend to me as pain and sorrow is. Cravings remind me from whence I have come and as difficult as they are to deal with I find embracing the crave is much easier than fighting. With peace and understanding there is calming and a quiet serenity allowing you to connect to your breath, your being, your very soul. It is with the breath you identify yourself as a non-smoker, free of chemicals, free to better health and free to a brighter, healthier YOU! And...having said THAT...please also remember for me, that in your WORST moments one never needs permission to use the "f" word...it is glorious enough that ALL of us are entitled to it. So, use it accordingly because some people are just worthy of hearing it. You should be proud of yourself! Talk about EVERYTHING...especially to people who don't want to listen to you. They will eventually leave you and who needs them anyway? They can go...(you know what)..themselves. This is YOUR POWER right now. Nobody can touch this. Speak to the mountain tops....speak your mind...use your words you have every right to be heard. Quitting smoking is the BRAVEST thing you will ever do in your life! Smoking is easy. Quitting? Not so much! Be well and congratulations on your wonderful work to healing and your beautiful freedom. Hi Maggie, You've done really well on your 24 days, there's no need for you to worry. As the good advice by these good people tells you - this is perfectly normal for the whole quitting process not be perfectly 'wrapped up' by now. I'm sure you must be feeling better than week one - therefore progress has been made. Well done! Keep it up!
