NRT's help to 'ease' the physical withdrawal symptoms. NRT's do not take away the mental cravings. Each time you lower/change the dose of nicotine you are ingesting into your body, expect approx 3 days of adjustment when it comes to your physical withdrawal symptoms. (rule of thumb)
The mental cravings take time and coping skills to get past. They get easier with time. Everyone's quit is different, but just to give you an example: My physical withdrawal symptoms (the worst of them) didn't take more than 3 days to get over. My mental cravings lasted 3 weeks. At 4 months, I still cough up mucus, I am working on losing the 20/30 pds I gained when I first quit. Other than that I am healthy, happy camper now.
Be patient and hang in there. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and be proactive by learning all you can and apply it to your new life.
Fondly,
Free
