My Smoking Spouse....

Hi Cheer First of all, congratulations on 135 smoke-free days. Please don't let anything take away this freedom. My hubbie smokes (but has been going outside since I quit) To be honest, I was so sick and tired of my addiction controlling my life, that quitting had very little to do with him. This quit is all about me taking my life back. I wonder that perhaps as we progress in our quit, it might be easy to forget how awful we felt when we were smokers and how difficult it was to get through those first weeks of physical and emotional withdrawal. I am still so close to them that it is hard to forget. I'm not sure if I have any helpful advice other than asking him to smoke outside and by encouraging him when he is ready to take the plunge again. I send lots of support, wish I could help but want to remind you to please please please don't give up something that you worked SO hard to achieve. You are a winner! Hi cheermom, My boyf smokes - a lot!!! He's not allowed to smoke in the house, so doesn't bother me too much. (Apart from the fact that he stinks!!! But I forgive him for that, I stank too, before I quit.) Our lives are governed by us - and only us. Please don't give anyone the power for what you do in life. If your husband smokes, so be it... The success of your fabulous 135 days smoke-free is yours alone. No-one else gave you that freedom, you earned it, on your own. You are quite fantastic! Kim, I know what you mean, I had a trying day with my hubby. He smoked in the car today (I was in it), and never even asked if I minded. Actually, he did it more than once. I craved bad today. I can usually block it out, but we had several drinks over the course of today out with family, and it killed my willpower. I think I'm hitting a rough spot in my quit, but remind myself it will pass. I keep telling myself that I am free of this addiction and don't ever want to be a slave again to cigs. I am looking forward to enjoying the warmth of the house in the winter, without having to huddle on the backporch in the freezing cold. Let's just keep trying to set a good example for our hubbies, they may come around. Hang in there, quit sister Andrea My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 136 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,739 Amount Saved: $646 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 12 Mins: 33 Seconds: 52

Well, last night I had talked with my spouse that sometimes I wish I could smoke with him. The thing that keeps me quit is looking outside at how cold it is (snowed 14 inches where I live in a few hours) and not ever wanting to have to stand out there again. He admitted that he never wants me to smoke again and that eventually he will quit. He just has no desire to do so. He still gets mad when he stinks so bad that I crinkle my nose. Told him that will never go away as I HATE the smell, especially since it was snowing yesterday it is a wet cig smell :gasp: This morning he hacked his lung up and I was like I'm so glad I dont do that anymore. He said it wasn't smoking, just a cold. I just thought to myself, sureeeee it is. Hugs and thanks for everyone's help. I will hold onto my quit since now I'm the example. Why is it so darn hard to stay quit with a smoking spouse. I asked someone who lives next door to me and his wife still smokes and he says its a constant reminder that he used to smoke. He says it is difficult to stay quit and has for 15+ years. I keep thinking I can't go through the thought process for that many years. Does anyone have smoking spouses and how are you handling it? I made a promise to stay smoke-free over the weekend and I will keep my promise no matter how hard it is. I have my tools ready and friends handy. Hey Kim... Wow! You are great at 138 days. And you got some pretty good advice from others as well. Just to add my "Two Cents" worth. My wife still smokes. I quit, she never even tried to. But it's O.K. as I was ready to quit and she wasn't. She feels guilty. I have no problem with her smoking. In fact, during the first couple months in my quit I quite possibly kissed her a bit more to get that smoking smell on her breath. This far into my quit I really don't pay much attention to it anymore. Ya, I smell it. But it doesn't make me want a smoke now or even early into my quit. Keep that great quit going! N.O.P.E.
