Thanks, everyone for your encouragement. I'm now at day 6 and still doing fine. And - I DO have a reward planned for me at the end of the first week - I'm getting a pedicure tomorrow!! I am confident that I am going to make it this time! Everything I've read about quitting smoking says that the first 72 hours are the toughest....that after 72 hours the nicotine is out of your body and things get easier after that. This has never been the case for me. The first 72 hours have always been a piece of cake. It's day 6, 7 and beyond that gets to me. So, here I am on day 5, preparing for the worst. I quit the first of July for 7 days. Never made it past the 7th. Last year I quit for 8 weeks on the patch. When it was time to discontinue the patch I was in Barcelona, Spain with a smoking friend, and well - you guessed it. Two days after the patch came off, my friend got her purse snatched as we were walking down the street and I went right back to smoking. I started smoking when I was 12 years old. I smoked for 34 years, then quit cold turkey in 1990. I was quit for 13 years. Then my husband decided to take a hike and we got into a really nasty divorce that went on for 3 years. That's when I picked up smoking again after being smoke free for 13 years. What an idiot I was! I have been a closet smoker, so I don't have a support person. This site has been an inspiration and I am determined to be smoke free once again!

HI LINDALOU, YOU HAVE DONE IT ONCE FOR THREE YEARS, SO YOU KNOW IT CAN BE DONE! STAY WITH THIS SITE, IT REALLY IS A GREAT HELP. I SMOKED FOR 35 YRS. I HAVE TRIED MANY TIMES TO QUIT AND FAILED. IT HAS BEEN TWO WEEKS FOR ME NOW AND I FEEL GREAT. I STARTED WITH THE PATCH AND IT KEPT FALLING OFF SO I FIGURED IT WAS A SIGN TO GO COLD TURKEY. I DID AND IT HAS BEEN MUCH EASIER. FOR ME PRAYER WAS MY ANSWER. WHATEVER WORKS. HANG IN THERE YOU CAN DO IT. GO GIRLLLLL!!!! Lindaloo, Well you will here this alot, all quits are different.Typical when people say the first 72 hrs are the hardest, is physical. It all truth it takes about 72 hrs to physicaly withdrawl from nicotine. It should be ou of your body in about 72hrs. However the nic is not the only thing your addicted to. It could be the other chems, it could be the way smoke makes you feel. It took me awhile but I really liked the way the warm smoke went down my throat. It sounds gross. Now I drink hot tea. Unfortanly when the nic is gone that is when the real battle begins. Depending on how long you smoked for, and how you used them to balence you out. It stinks but it is all mental. Your subconsious is so used to using the drug to well balance your moods. That is why it is so easy to go back to it after a long period of time your mind does not forget. During this time remember your reasons for quiting, and think about all the bennifits. There is a list 25 reasons to quit. It is in one of the other forums. I'll bump it for you. Ok sorry so long, one more thing I have learned this week. I would try to quit, get upset and start again. Junkie Thinking, "I need cig cuz I am upset." It will not fix anything, in fact you will just be an upset smoker. The truth is you just need the time it takes to do it. And of course Deep Breaths. Good luck to you. YOU CAN DO IT. Please listen to everyone. You are saying a lot of contradictory things. I think you can do it, because you have done it before. History is a good predictor. Hi LindaLoo.. I read the same things that you did - what I have personally learned is that there is a bunch of contradicting information out there. I had the worste withdrawals on days 7, 14, and 23. It wasn't constant though ... Just those days. I think that a more accurate picture is that the nicotine is out in 3 weeks - not 3 days. But, then you have to remember that you're not just adicted to nicotine. What do they say? 48 of the chemicals are adictive? Anyhow - I think that you'll do good to remember that every quit is different. Some seem harder, and soem seem easier, and some have their difficult periods at diffrent times, so please don't wait for the worste for tomorrow. If there's one thing i've learned in life it's that you usually get what you expect out of it. Welcome tot he group, and congratulations on your decision and several smoke free days. You're doing fine, and you're going to do fine. Come on Lindaloo, lets do this together. Keep remembering that things get better with every passing minute you are smoke free. Use this site, there are a lot of people on here that have gone through what you are going through and let me also say you can pretty much yell, scream, say bad words (kind of) or just vent and they will still be here for you. It's a great support system, so use it, it has made a HUGE difference in my quit this time. Congrats on your quit and your 5 smoke free days. Lindaloo, Every person is different and every quit is different. Even though the nicotine may leave your body, you will probably experience cravings and withdrawals. Keep working through the program and keep devising ways to fight cravings. Start planning for day 7 now, instead of on day 7. Also plan a special reward for the end of day 7, it will give you something to work towards. Keep strong and keep us posted, Danielle ________________________ The SSC Support Team
