Just How Many Cancer Sticks Did You Use to Smoke Each Day

18 years ago 0 607 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I smoked about 25 to 30 cigs a day and would walk up the stairs to my bedroom on the top floor huffing and puffing. I was tired of not being able to keep up with my 6 year old (and I am only 38) and started to see all my friends and family dying of cancer. It really started to hit home and my daughter had made th comment that she sure hopes I can see her graduate from college (which geesh she has 12 years of college and year 1 is about to begin). So I figured I wanted to regain my life back and do the things I never could do. It has been a major roller coaster for me (and my quit hubby) but I made it through to 55 days and looking forward to the 56th, 57th, etc etc. Hugs Kim My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 55 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,383 Amount Saved: $222.75 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 21 Mins: 6 Seconds: 37

I was a solid pack-a-day dude. Occasionally would go over on the weekends, but pretty steady at exactly 1 pack per day. Now for some real fun. This is from a post I made several months ago: The actual 'spec' of a standard cigarette is 3.3 inches long. Specifics:

Camel, Benson/Hedges, Marlboro Lights, Merit, etc. - 84 mm / 3.3059 in
Virginia Slims - 98mm / 3.86119 in
Capri - 97mm / 3.821799 in
So take your total cigarettes not smoked and multiply times appropriate inches. Divide that result by 12 to get your feet of smokes not smoked! So for me, I smoked 20 Camel Lights per day. 20*3.3059 = 66.118. 66.118/12 = 5.51 FEET of cigarettes per day that I smoked. Some fun numbers:

Standard Competition Swimming Pool - 150 feet (50 yards)
A 747-400 (the most common 747) is 225 feet from nose to tail
Average Football Field - 300 feet (1 yard being 3 feet)
Empire State Building (roof) 1,250 feet
1 complete lap around a standard school track - 1,320 feet
1 mile - 5,280 feet
1 complete lap around Daytona Speedway - 7,920 feet (2.5 miles)
Have fun! I smoked two packs a day for almost 45 years. Quit twice and looks like the third time was gonna be the charm cause one cold winter morning I grabbed all my packs, lighters and ashtrays and went down to the dumpster and tossed em' all in came back in and went cold turkey and never looked back. :) Moodyblue~ My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 537 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 21,518 Amount Saved: $3329.4 Life Gained: Days: 70 Hrs: 22 Mins: 49 Seconds: 32

I simply can't believe there is a doctor out there who recommends that you 'keep' smoking?? Can quitting cause anxiety? yes...and I guess that can cause a more rapid heart beat....still, the heart doctors that I know (and I have dealt with a couple of grand ones what with my mother and father both having heart surgeries and ongoing heart problems) emphatically advise to stop smoking!! smoking causes your body to work better??? I don't think so. It IS true that quitting is gonna upset things for a period of time. Nicotine is a "drug" and there are side effects to both using and getting off it! your body has made adjustments to having that nicotine in it's blood stream....when you take that away, it will have to have time to adjust........ after over 4 years free, my body now functions MUCH better than it did while I was smoking. If you have a doctor that recommends you keep smoking, you should be moving on to another doctor! I put my quit meter at 2 pks..40 cigs...but I know in truth I was smoking more than that. Hubby was smoking about 3pks and more during stressful times. We were the type of addicts that just continued to up our usage.....there were honestly times when I was smoking and still craving more. Those feelings were what finally made me realize I had lost control of my life. Nicotine ran it. it's good to still remember that feeling. It's better to have killed it! We now run our OWN lives. Katy Kickin' ASH for Four years, seven months, one day, 30 minutes and 33 seconds. 66920 cigarettes not smoked, saving $9,541.68. Life saved: 33 weeks, 1 day, 8 hours, 40 minutes.

This is a great way to validate your quit! You can learn from one another and realize the intensity of this disease :) Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
