Wow, I am so nervous! Have never been in a chat room or a message board (I don't even know what this is!) before, but I am desperate to quit smoking. This will be my 3rd attempt. Quit once for 4 months (cold turkey & I swear I went insane - just ask my husband!), then smoked for 1 month, quit for another month (used over counter & prescription aids but really uneasy w/taking a drug to quit a drug) but started again. Has now been 5 solid months of 1-1/2 packs a day. Am 49, have had many recent life changes, new marriage, moved to different state, still seeking employment so in the meantime I'm sitting around at home smoking my brains out . . . sigh . . . cough, cough. I keep telling myself that once I'm employed again I will have a routine & that it will be easier to quit. Am just kidding myself. I need to quit & do not have friends (yet as so new to area) and no family near. My husband is wonderful but neutral, he just keeps saying it is not a moral issue, that he loves me whether I smoke or not. Just finished reading the 1st section & am posting now before I read the next. I set my quit date as of this Sunday. Am so tense just typing about it makes my neck & shoulders scream (area where I carry stress). Does this computer support group thing really work? Thank you so much for the response. I feel like I should read Computers for Dummies first as it took me 30 minutes to figure out how to 'see' your response! Nothing like finding out you're no longer logged on . . . and then the hunt to find the password. One of my blonde moments again. Anyway, just wanted to say it really made me feel better that someone talked back to me about this. And you have 75 DAYS! That's just great . . . I noticed this tiny thought cross my mind that said, maybe I could do it with all of you here too. Well, any little seed of motivation is a start. Will do as you suggest & print out the manual & read the site. Thanks again Breaking Free. I am using the patch and a huge box of small packets of sun flower seeds. I want this quit badly enough that this has been the easiest quit so far. All previous quits I had a slip with in a day or two. I'm on day 8 and going strong. I wasn't sure I could go 2 hours without a smoke, but now I'm looking forward to what I'll be like in a year or two. I already notice changes. My family gets closer to me more often (I don't smell), Food is yummy, and I notice that all my thoughts about not smoking are not any different then thoughts about smoking. I think about smoking as much as I did before, except this time I'm just putting "No" in front of the thought. The thoughts are getting less by the day, but of coarse at 8 days, I've got a ways to go too. Sounds like you want to quit, but you're the only one who knows. When I started I wasn't sure I could do it, but I _KNEW_ I wanted to. 1 day after I quit, I'm now 100% sure this is the one. That doesn't make it easier, it just makes it the last time I'm going to have to do it. I take it a day at a time, sure, but I also think ahead a week knowing that by next week, this weeks quit will be behind me... And 1 week sure does go by fast. Hi Ericon, I smoked on and off for 14 years. My first quit lasted 3 years my second quit lasted a few months. The difference between the first and the last quit.....support. I have somewhere i can go to vent my anger, share my low moments celebrate my milestones, ask questions and know i will not be laughed at and knowing that im not the only one going through this is a HUGE comfort. :) and as Marie says (and its soooo so true . . . one day at a time) Its not going to be easy but remember we will ALL be here to help you through the good and bad days. Hi Ericon and welcome!!! Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking and YES this support group really works at least it's working for me. It's great to share with people who understand where you are coming from. I've met some wonderful people here. The support and encouragement is unbelievable!!! I'm using the patch and doing great with it, had 1 bad day so started over the next day more determined than ever. I have smoked 2+ PACKS a day for over 40 years. Use whatever works for you just DON'T SMOKE! Remember we are all here for you, read and post often it really helps.
