Hi guys, I have noticed other new quitters on the site that are also having trouble sleeping or going to sleep at night. I tried melatonin for the first time last night, as Healer suggested. I took one 500mcg tablet right as i was going to bed. By golly, it helped!!! Anyone who is having trouble falling asleep should try this natural remedy...thanks Healer. Shevie, Herbs are mild. Arsenic is evident in the body in proper amounts. Herb people would never prescribe arsenic. Melatonin is made in the brain. I don't know of an herb ever hurting anybody. In the interests of full disclosure and our own protection, we all need to be aware of possible side effects of any "natural" or "herbal" remedies we may decide to use. "Natural" and "herbal" are not necessarily good. Arsenic occurs naturally, so does radon. Aspirin's original source was from the leaves and bark of a willow tree. Even grapefruit is known to have adverse effects on many prescription medicines. My personal opinion is that modern western medicine is way too heavy on man-made drugs and the knife. Natural remedies and methods are often quite appropriate and preferrable to modern medicine's remedies and methods provided they are used properly. Getting quit is good. Getting quit safely is also good. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 399 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,983 Amount Saved: $1516.2 Life Gained: Days: 74 Hrs: 9 Mins: 50 Seconds: 49

ex, When you first quit or cut down, you may find it difficult to sleep as long as you used to. Two things can cause this are: As a smoker your sleep may have been interrupted by constant coughing and/or difficulty breathing. When you stop smoking, your body gets healthier and the sleep you get is more restful. So if you wake up suddenly at 5:00 a.m., you may think you are a victim of insomnia. You're probably not! Your body has probably had all the sleep it needs. Smoking drains your body's energy. When you quit smoking you regain this energy. You may need fewer hours of sleep. How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting. Tips to help: Try making sure you have a regular sleeping schedule. If you wake up in the middle of the night do some light stretches, or read a book to help you get to sleep. You may also check with your pharmacist for information on sleeping aids. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.
