Have Smokers No Shame For What They Are Doing...

17 years ago 0 1450 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Have smokers no shame for what they are doing? I suspect many smokers ARE ashamed they smoke. Shame has created many a closet smoker and public smokers experience it too. I can remember when I was trying to quit. I was standing outside smoking with a co-worker. I looked at that death stick and told him, I hate this thing. I feel like a weak fool for not being able to stop smoking. He said, Just keep trying and youll make it one day. He was right. He was also among the first to congratulate me when I announced my quit date. Now that I am quit, my friend quickly puts out his cigarette when I drive up or step outside. Ive never asked him to do that, but I know he does it because he is embarrassed and ashamed for me to see him smoking. Sometimes when hes out there smoking the door gets left open and the SHS drifts into the building. I dont like smelling it or breathing it and I am not shy about removing myself from it! Nevertheless, Ill never complain about it to him. Why? Because, he already feels like a weak fool and I remember what that feels like. I agree this new report is something everyone should read. I've noticed that the SSC has a lot more people browsing the site ever since the report was released. Are you putting the SSC website address on your flyers? ;p All the best~ 2 I Killed MY Nicodemon *Hey, that's one less evil do'er 2worry about* ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 322 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,105 Amount Saved: $1610 Life Gained: Days: 30 Hrs: 15 Mins: 42 Seconds: 59

Even though we have all been a source of second hand smoke at some time or another, we cannot be laying a guilt trip on ourselves for it (you and everyone else, Mr. Ed :)). That is not healthy and it accomplishes nothing. We smoked, we were addicted to nicotine and truly were not totally in control of ourselves. We need to take pride in the fact that we have taken control of our addiction and that we are no longer contributing to this problem. You know, Bubba, on the one hand, what Breaking Free says is true about your flyers. They probably are mostly ignored, or they annoy/anger, and trying to change laws is probably time better spent. But on the other hand, what you're doing is more satisfying and more direct. And if it turns one person, you've done your job. I doubt anyone will read it and throw down their cigs declaring their freedom (there's a visual :)), but you are planting seeds and that's much more than most of us do. The lady that defended herself is truly sad, for her and her children. But that's the horrid addict part of smoking. Hopefully, her seed won't die, but will take root and grow someday. It sounds like you're putting your e-mail on the flyers? If so, how's it working out? Recently I posted a URL here and the thread was accordingly deleted. That is site policy and I accept that. However, I am going to see if this sticks as I feel it is paramount to disemminate to your smoking family and friends and to you all who have thoughts of slipping: On June 27, the US Surgeon General posted the lastest finding on the effects of environmental or second-hand smoke(SHS). It was really an eye opener inasmuch as it made profound discoveries concerning what it is doing the adults and the little ones alike. The amount of people that they have proved are dieing yearly from SHS is shocking. The spin off runs the range of heart disease to asthma in babies. Further it states that 85% of us still have direct exposure to those who smoke. I noticed the smokers before but now I want to do something for them. Thus, I have order hundreds of copies of the report and intend to keep them handy for when I encounter a smoker. I am 6'-0" and do not expect I will get swing on. If so, I imagine they will be so out of breath that I could defend myself. Now, to ursurp site policy and stand inbounds, go to the web site I mentioned and click on the June 27, 2006 report. Yes, I am becoming a one man anti-second hand smoke defense league. I had no intention of taking the fun out of life. It is clear that I am having a better one smoke free. When I put anything here, just read it and take from it as little, or as much as you wish. Yes, we all have ours lives and at least if we avoid the smoker...we can have a healthier life. One person has emailed me to say that they will smoke around there children and that I must feel as though I am holier than thou. Sad indeed. The logic wasn't clear. Something about cholrine in there drinking water. Hummmmmmmm. I understand the point about everything having it's draw backs. The choice is clearly ours. I am not putting my email address of the web site of SSC on the piece. It is exactly as if comes from the printing press. All I want to do is make them think about it enough that one day they will say thats it. I quit. Check out the next WalMart or Sams Wholesale you go in. They always have a bullpen sit up for the smokers. The day they banned the smoking on the property will be a great day. I say that because usually the breaks the employees get are not long enough for the EE to leave the property. As a matter of fact, I am going to write the CEO of Walmart when I finished this. I enjoy spending my spare time helping others save there lives. Don't you? No, I have not put my email on my handouts. Picture this...I al walking toward an entrance to a store and a person is standing outside getting the last puff. Or as at WalMart, I am walking past there bullpen they provide for employees. Those types of situations will give me an opportunity to simply hand some smoker a piece and just keep walking. I am getting those little religious handouts all the time. Maybe it is time we preach a little to save people - them souls, us life. I am getting really concerned about evil. If I had not be able to stop after 46 years, then I would not be so sure of it doing some good.
