[/quote] And the important thing to remember about that, for me, anyway, is that I've smoked for 40 years. The only things I've experienced in my life without a flaming bunch of dried leaves stuffed in my face is in the last 16 days! So there are going to be things and places and events that I have not experienced non smoking that can and probably will prompt me to reach for that danged thing UNLESS I am prepared. Not hypervigilent forever, just protective, like you would of a tender shoulder, or a long ago broken ankle. Thanks for this thread, it gave me an "AhHAA" moment! Well put, very well put. Interesting perspective - - I especially like the "irrelevant thought" vs "craving" thought choice. You have definitely found how to insert positives where negatives could be interpreted. Thanks Alison for another post I can refer to . . . I've been dwelling on my negatives too much lately. You know today, my husband called to make reservations at the hotel where we spent our wedding night. I said that's what i wanted to do for my 1 month no smoking celebration. I said we should get the same room, and he said "You know, that's a smoking room, and we're non smokers now." So, we got a different room - didn't want all that stinky.. eww. Though, the remarkable part of what my husband said is that he never was a smoker. I think that really drove home the fact that I could never go back. I'm trying to avoid the routines I had before, I realise that I have to change many things in my life, I have to exercise more,no more junk food allowed (maybe once a month )love junk food. And most of all I have faith that I can do this and I reenforce that every day as soon as I get out of bed, I use selftalk. I'm an ex-smoker now. So now what do I do. How do I transform from an ex-smoker to non-smoker? Times are going to get easier, so what do I do? Just wait for them? No. I need to be ready for whatever life throws at me so that I can fight any triggers and/or craves I may have. I want to be a non-smoker for the rest of my life. I'm not going to let my guard down now. I have to learn how to cope with emotions again. I know that stress is an inevitable part of life. So when I am faced with stress, I am going to discuss the problem with friends, family or co-workers. I know that holding in frustration will only intensify my emotions which isn't healthy for me and could possibly be a trigger for me to smoke. I am going to practice relaxation techniques: Meditation, Prayer, Exercise, Massage, and Yoga. Now that I am at the point of maintaining my quit, I'm getting to work on the weight gain. Smoking involved having something in your mouth. Overeating can be a substitute if one is not mindful of their intake. Food tastes better once you stop smoking. Cigarettes dull your taste buds. Quitting slows down your metabolism. If you eat the same amount that you ate when you smoked you will probably gain weight. So I am committed to increasing my physical activity, eating less food, not drinking any calories, eating only low calorie snacks like fruits and vegetables, eat slower and enjoy my meals. And last but not least I'll remember I'm not alone. SSC is always here.
