Hi Bob - What a post!! First, I want to thank you for sharing your story. Even though, through the last year, I learned each of the various pieces, it was wonderful and inspirational to see it all sewn together in the tapestry of your whole experience. You are so eloquent and always speak from the heart with such wisdom. Secondly, I want to thank you for starting all of our milestone places - the century club, the 6-12 club, the VIP club et al. These places have become an integral part of the SSC and have provided tangible goals, as well as places for comic relief and escape. How I and many have loved the various environments you created to celebrate our achievements. Thirdly, I want to differ with you about how this site has changed. In my opinion, this site is STILL full of "many super fine people who really care and gave a dam." I agree with Joe and believe that what has changed is us. I know for myself, I do not post as often or spend so much time here. Thus my investment is down as is my knowledge of the folks here. Also, the longer I am a non-smoker, the less tolerance I have for all of the whining. I take this so seriously,I just want to scream "DO IT and get on with your life!!! You will DIE if you don't!!!" And yet underneath it all, I remember how much fear, and ambivalence and whining was underneath my own resolve to stop. Thus I have the utmost compassion for the narcissism, immaturity and lack of sanity of anyone undertaking this process. As I look through the posts several times a week, I am still struck by how supportive this site is and how welcoming and caring people are. Yeah, noone seems as incredible as the group that quit along side of me - but I think it is because THAT group was in a war with me and I feel I know them in the depths of my soul. The newer group, shallower? No, I don't think so. Maybe younger. That could be a difference. And my investment in them is shallower. Because I have moved on and am enjoying the freedom from addiction. Fourth, I just want to express my hope that as a grandpparent, you will still occasionally visit the site. Your longetivity (both as a non-smoker and as a person) have added an incredible depth of wisdom, humor and perspective. You have been such an important p

Tomorrow is our anniversery me 18 months and Roxanne 6 months. I don't think I have ever told the real story about how we come to quit and what was involved getting to that point. After 18 months here and the SSC we find that it is no longer the same SSC as when we first joined. Allowing for natural change still does not compensate for the changes that are occuring here and thus we are leaving. It was a great site with many super fine people who really cared and gave a dam. I can not thank enough my mentors who took care of me when I need help. I am sorry that I can not offer that same help to the new quitters. But back to the story: Tonight I get the luxury of having time to reflect on the ups and downs of the past 18 months. My bride has a movie she wants to watch, one that I dont care for so I get the night off. I started smoking during WWII and never thought of the potential health failure that it can cause. It was really a way of life and it seemed like every one smoked. So that was my early on education regarding nicotine. When the Korean War broke out and I found my self there getting shot at, half froze to death, scared half to death and at the ripe old age of 17 wondering what life was all about. But there was some peace involved we got free cigarettes in our C-rations. I hated the Chesterfields so I traded for Lucky Strike when ever I could. There was never a shortage for a comforting smoke to ease the nerves. In January 2005, I had played a round of golf and something popped in my upper back and I was in a very intense pain situation. I went to my GP and he ran a bone density scan for me. Guess what Osteoporosis hey wait a minute that is for women not me. Doc says tall slender males are just as exposed as women. Ta Da. What causes this Doc simple says Doc SMOKING. Also discovered were, from the x-rays, 3 hair line fractures of the Thoracic Spine. No golf, no physical activities so get a new life and quit smoking or die. In January 2005 our neighbors has invited us over for dinner. My wife went on while I took care of our two dogs. When I went out to follow her I found her on the ground, all she could whisper was I cant breathe. I couldnt pick her up with my back out but my neighbors son-in-law did and away

To: Bubba, Luna, Lolly, Rusty, Joe, Lady, Hummy,Shevie, N2K, Rob, Mr Ed and RD a very special thank you :) Your words of encouragement are a real blessing. To the rest of you wonderful people who posted a very special thanks. Roxanne and I celebrated today and and as I think I have made clear, my reward for 18 months is Rox's 6 months. Her reward will be a new car, hair do, nails, clothes etc, and a trip to the islands. I have to do some reconstructive brain orientation, thanks to Pen and a few others I may go in for an optorectomy and if successful, I may linger around the site for a while to see how this all plays out. Keep the faith gang ;) Bob aka Duffis My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 546 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 16,399 Amount Saved: $1403.22 Life Gained: Days: 109 Hrs: 7 Mins: 58 Seconds: 9
