cheermom: OH, God, I HATE that!! PEOPLE SUCK!!! Congratulations on your SMOKE FREE LIFE!!!! BRAVO!!! I don't know if this helps but my strategy for keeping the pounds off has been to reward myself for my quit with junk food every Friday. In turn, I take HOT YOGA twice a week which is a great way to eliminate toxins from the body. 92 days for you and going strong!!!! I am sorry you are not feeling well right now. Please don't let negative words harm your spirit or discourage you. Trust your goal. Trust your journey. You are AMAZING... Love and Light. Theresita... i have put on 10 pounds comfort crave eating but I am not that bothered its better to have some fat on you than be all skinny and wrinkly on the face... so dont worry about it so long as you are not overly upset about the weight. hay cheermom you are not alone. This has been the reason why I always start smoking again, or I use it as an excuse for not quiting. This time I have been doing aerobics for 30 to 45 min a day and walk about 30 min a day, yikes to much work but it seems to be working for me. I gained about 5 pounds at the start then started to exercise and watch what I eat and it has helped I am the same weight as when I started. Someone posted today that if you smoked a pack a day and each cig takes 6 min to smoke that is 2 hours a day you were smoking and doing nothing else, so this makes the exercising like nothing if we think this way. (sometimes it is all a mind game) Please do not start smoking to loose weight go do some exercise. You will feel alot better also. Just think if you lost the 16 pounds (Which you well) and not smoking yikes that would really show them. Well I better go for a walk. I have taken to walking everywhere... which given that I have arthritis is pretty insane of me... But you know what?? It's helping... Yeah I know, strange right?? Well, the exercise is building up the strength in my joints, I am getting my poor dog into shape and I am losing weight too.. I have taken up eating healthy and smaller portions too.. I have 3 meals a day and 3 healthy snacks as well as drinking 8 * 500ml bottles of water (yeah that's 4 litres).. The water fills me up so I don't have the urge to eat so much junk.. I eat 6 portions of fruit a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner and spend 1 hour 30 mins a day walking.... (when not been recovering from illness that is)... Hopefully the weight will soon start to drop.. I am at 156lbs at the moment which for someone who is 5ft 4 is a bit on the heavy side.. Basically what I am saying is that you need to tackle both diet and exercise to lose the weight.. But any change is a good thing... especially if it is a change for the healthier.. Krissie PS.. I would have punched my doc if he had spoken to me like that...

I think that I have just traded one addiction for another. Quit smoking and started eating. I am just starting, but I have read and been told that exercise is a great stress reliever. So that should help the mindless snacking not due to hunger. Also if I am exercising I can not be eating, right? I say go for it. I also had to get myself in the mind set to watch what I eat just like I did when I did when I quit smoking. Hang in there we can do this together. Cheermom congrats on your stats. I think Drs. don't realise what quitting smoking entails, you have to have smoked to know this. So don't be too hard on yourself, just try and loose the weight slowly as it's the best way not to gain it back. Perfection takes time you'll do it when you're ready one thing at a time :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 86 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,304 Amount Saved: $344 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 11 Mins: 20 Seconds: 22

Hey quit sister, I'm in exactly the same spot, except I have not been back to the doctor yet to hear it. My guess is I've gained around the same, I just can't hide it anymore. I joined a gym the other day, tomorrow will be my first time exercising in years, I hate to admit it. I feel secure enough in my quit, now I'm just trying to convince myself that if I quit smoking, I CAN take off the weight, same kind of willpower, right? Smoking will not make us lose the weight we gained, so why entertain those thoughts? We can do it! Losing weight and quitting smoking are attainable. Not much you can do about being ugly---and your Dr. was being VERY ugly! :)

Not a happy camper. I went to the doctors from this nasty congestion/cold (so I thought - ended up being bronchitis and a sinus infection) and my doctor looks at me and said, "well, you quit smoking, ummm, its time to start taking off the 16 pounds you put on". Now that was not a boost of confidence for me, it actually slammed me. I really didn't think quitting smoking would do THAT much damage, but it had. I was talkign to my smoking neighbor and she basically said what my excuse had been before, "that is why I won't quit smoking". Fear of gaining weight. Her husband basically said, fatter but healthier or skinnier and dying from lung cancer. No brainer. How do you get back in the mind set to actually start caring about the weight problem? Now that the temptations and cravings are over with (even around smokers it actually discusts me), how do I get in the mindset I dont NEED to start smoking again to loose the weight. It actually crossed my mind. Shame on me! Hi Cheermom. Wow, can I ever relate to where you are in your quit. I too have put on 16 pounds and have just recently started to tackle taking it back off. You know what? I needed to feel the same kind of readiness with the weight issue as I did with the smoking one. By that I mean that I needed to be truely ready to diet and start exercising again or it wasnt going to work. This past week, something just clicked with me. I walked past a mirror image of myself and couldnt believe it was me! Well I put my fork down and decided to take action. I have started counting points again (You know that very popular weight program)? And I joined Curves again. Love that place (hope this post doesnt get deleted). Anyways, I went for the first time last night and I felt so AWESOME when I got home. For the first time in weeks I feel motivated and full of energy to get this going. Ok, I'm rambling on about me, but what I wanted to tell you is that the time will come for you when you are ready to do something about the weight and the continued journey of your healthy new life. Maybe the doctors office was just the wake up call you needed - like walking in front of that mirror was for me. And you know what else? That entire theory of not quitting smoking because we will gain weight is the most dumb a#@ theory out there! I used to subscribe to it as well but then I quit and realized I would rather live - I feel sorry for you neighbour that she cant see past it. You can do this - you've all ready done the hardest part, the rest will fall into place when you are ready. Deciding when you are ready is the question.
