Where to find the Doc?

Kim. Please don't leave this forum becausd I was upset and read you wrongly. This IS a very serious problem and we canall help each other in moving forward and understanding how we work or don't work.Being held hostage at gun-point was wht brought mt panic and anxiety to the surface, tho it was buried for a long time. This is a good place to discuss ways of dealing with panic diosrder, depression, and anxiety. I'm sure you undertand what a batle it is totry and find ones self. I promise you, I don't want to see you leave here. But if you wish to vent, and that is good to do, explain that's what you are doing. Like ' time to vent, folks'. I'm sure there are times when I would like to vent and rid myself of some of the anger and frustration with not having complete control of my life, but let the others know so there are no upsets. I'm very sorry if I offended in any way and wish you'd stay. You have alot of good input and knowledge in you, and maybe we can help others as well as ourselves with our posts. Please stay and post. We would miss you very much if you left. LUV, SUZY.

Let me clarify. I was not being FUNNY.. It makes me angry.. I sent me OFF when I saw the "addiction and mental health"... It makes me so frustrated and discouraged.... so forgive me if I vented within my personality of sarcasm. Trust me when I tell you all this... This is no joke. There is no one person in this room that understands that better than me. I cannot get away from myself. And I cannot promise to post without occasional sarcasm or anger because that is who I am -and that is how I cope... but you sit tight.. because.. I too am looking for help and answers - and this is not the place for ME... good luck to all of you... This is a tough road - a very difficult life.. but it is workable.. so I am told. Take care and God Bless...

Anne-Marie..I don't think that a person in this situattion is worrid about a stigma; just wants help and fellowship with others suffering the same things. Support is very important and being told that you are O.K. is the validation many are looking for. Also an understanding of what is going on with thier minds and bodies. There are more and more every year suffering from panic dissorder and depression, with the pressures of todays living. I take this as very serious. With smoking, that is our choice. With panic disorder and anxiety or depression, it is not a choice. It can come on to anyone at any time, and a forum like this can be very helpful in helping them unerstand and how to cope and where to get the right help in a serious situation. I don't think levity is needed in such a serious forum as this. Very small triggers can set some people off, and to look at the deep end, suicide is not far away for some. So I really don't think 'funny' is expected here. I thought, as probably many did, when I found of this forum, what a great place to connect and understand and maybe to move forward. No jokes please. My thoughts only, and if others want the levity in a serious problem, I will seek groups or forums elsewhere. Thanks for listening. LUV, SUZY.

Yes, stigma is a big thing to deal with, when we encounter it. While such a title may make someone hesitate for a moment, we have to realize it's a Center for Mental *Health* though, not the opposite. In this age of funding cutbacks, some agencies and clinics merge with others in order to pool resources. I'm told that this is what they did in Toronto, and that Torontonians are familiar with the clinic. Would calling a phone number to get appropriate help with one's situation really label a person? Who's to know? Might holding back from getting treatment not create more problems? -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator

Kim....sorry if I took your statement seriously. But I just joined this forum and have been looking for this type of communication for some years now. I took what you said quite seriously and was taken aback with it, knowing you from the smoking forums, I should have known better. Next time, use an explation mark, or LOL or something to let us know that you're clowning around. I've had too much of that with my deprression and attacks. Like.."for heavens sake, flush all those pills and get on with life"..duh!!!......LUV, SUZY.

Say Suzy... Just a bit of mention..LOL.. Kim is the Joker in the group.. Suzy meet Kim, Kim, Suzy....the words may not mean what you have interpreted them to mean..(sorry If you feel as tho i'm speaking for ya Kim) I think I understand what Kim IS saying... SHE knows all that stuff you have written in response (least I would think so. maybe not) But I think what she means is.. those that are looking for information from the beginning.. those that are just starting to look.. may not even consider the fact that this 'issue' would get lumped into a clinic that would treat addictions.. and so many are SO convinced IS in fact an PHYSICAL condition of some sort. And from my personal point of view.... I'm very uncomfortable about the word 'Mental Health'.. especially when is lumped w/ addictions.I mean I know WHAT it is.. I have a cognative understanding of the spectrum that it covers, dont get me wrong.. I guess is like being a 'stereo type'.. for instance.. when my kid was thought to have behaviorial issues,(and she does)the school system wanted me to have her evaluated. They were looking for a diagnosis of ADHD and additional behavioral 'issues'.. well there were three choices for this eval. It was suggested we bring her to a pshycologist.. WRONGO SAM!!! a pshycologist is more than capable of review, diagnosis and therapy.. but they can not prescribe meds... well this made no sense as we knew there WAS something in need of treatment and most likely some sort of meds needed. the next option was a Psyciatrist..a good suggestion could diagnos, and treat..but unable to run any acctuall physical tests...then there was the Neurologist. :) able to diagnose, do acctuall physical tests as needed to eliminate other possible causes due to chemicle imbalances etc.. And able to prescribe meds. (but not available for the mental therapy portion.) well there was no question in my mind about this... I did'nt want a 'mental health', a 'phsyciatric history' to follow her. seeing a phycologist does not quailfy as a 'phsyciatric history'.. we never use the term.. 'mental health issues' but the term 'behavioral issues'.. so you see... I think there are people that are affraid of the term 'mental health'.. especially if you dont understand what is happening to you.. if you t

kIM. pANIC DISORDER IS JUST THAT. a DISSORDER. And the best place to get help is thru a mental Health organization. Your own Doctor should be able to put uou in tuch with such an organization, or therapist for panic attacks and anxiety. The two go together. When your btain cana't cope with certain situations, that is where you have to look for the solutions. It is certainly nothing to be ashamed of as it is an illness. You really have to take a positive attitude toward your problem and be not afraid to call it what it is, or you will not be able to deal with it. I found many contacts in the West (Victoria BC) where there are medical groups, therapists, and groups that help a great deal with understanding and coping skills. Once you have a true understanding of what is happening to your body and brain, you have won half the battle. Don't be afraid to ask for help anywhereyou can get it. It means so much in the battle. Good luck. Even the crisis centre has help with contacts for you. And about the idea of self-medication - never do that. Always refer to your Doctor for advise. There are too many drugs out there ( over the counter) that can just manke matters worse, and many people turn to drinking to ease the anxiety; and then you are battleing more problems. I've seen that ruin a lost of lives that way, too. Its simply a medical problem that needs tending to by the professionals that understand your problem. If your doctor doesn't know too much about them, then see another one that does. My Doctor didn't know anything about them until I went to him about it, and he did some reseaarch and reading and now is well versed on the subject and just talking with him has helped me greatly. Good luck in your quest, and learn to relax when you feel the signs of one coming on. Breath, relax, and let it take its coarse and it will pass. LUV, SUZY. ;)

Who the hell is going to reach out for help for panic to an organization geared towards addiction and mental health? What a shame.
