I went to a bar tonight, started drinking

Aragh it was hard. It was a fairly nice place so not many people were smoking, but you know how it is, nobody smokes, then all of a sudden one person lights up,and before you know it the rest get out their filthy habit. I sat there and I really thought about smoking. It was so hard. I decided to drink no more, and come home early. There in lies a lesson. Now i am back, I am SO CHUFFED I didnt smoke. Right then the temptation was there staring me in the face, so I got out of the situation. Another problem that i have, is that my partner was a social smoker (in that he socially smoked my cigarettes). Now he is forced to quit, as I have quit.... and that is causing problems in itself. He is snappy as he cant smoke, which is ridiculous, as he hardly smoked anything anyway. I am glad that this board was here. It felt good that I did resist, and that i could come back here and I havent ruined my quit. What helped was the concept of treasuring, loving and taking care of your quit....... when I wanted to smoke, I thought of it like that, and didnt want to damage it... it helped. I had never thought of it like that before, but it made my quit more powerful and important than the cigarette. I feel almost ashamed to admit that i almost fell today. the only thing that pretty much stopped me buying a packet of cigarettes, was watching smokers - smoke... that really does put me off. But if there is nobody around smoking, my mind really does play tricks.(i hadnt noticed but hardly anyone smokes these days, its rare).. Today was so hard. it was roasting hot, cycled into town... I got so exhasperated, I said look I have to go in this shop and buy something.. Then I did that whole woman thing. I went into a shopping trance and time flew. Anyway I was in the shop for more than half an hour he was outside with the bikes, and couldnt get me as I didnt have my mobile phone. he was so angry with me. I came out of the shop smoking money bags of clothes shopping in hand and he was furious. Straight away again, I just wanted to smoke.. I knew it wouldnt make the situation work, but i just thought hey today is not good, I will do this on Monday again. I so wanted to do that, I dont know why I didnt. I hope that every weekend is not so bad. Today was a shocker. Thank you for your support. It makes me feel like I did the right thing by not smoking, I would have felt awful if I would have come back to read those posts and I would have smoked. Thanks I know this has to get better. Yay I feel great this morning, that I didnt smoke last night. I feel so great i am going to go to the hairdressers and she can make my hair stunning and clean like only the hairdressers can, as a reward for not smoking. Friday night was on my smoking plan as one of my toughest temptations, and i was worried about it. I wouldnt say it was easy, and we did need to leave early (and it didnt help that he fancied a smoke too) But I feel so great and so clean this morning. I know once the weekend is over I will have got through the first week, that is great. The danger of a social smoker as a partner, is that you believe your own rubbish that the junkie in your head tells you and he reinforces it, you know, I can just have smoke for tonight then stop.. He convinced me before (at 3 weeks) that I could just smoke at weekends, then not smoke in the week... ah my junkie loved that excuse. But then it took me another 6 weeks - month to start quitting again. Thank you for reading this is a wonderful board, and it helps so much. It empowers me, because i am not relying on my boyfriend. We are not rowing, therefore I am not stressed, and making the excuse to smoke. Brilliant. :o) My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 5 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 103 Amount Saved: 25 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 10 Mins: 52 Seconds: 31

It does get better Niks ... it does ... it just takes time and it is a process. Be gentle with yourself. Forgive yourself through the process. Learn to let some things go ... to not let some things 'get to you'. That is a lesson I have had to learn ... as I feel I am in a bit of an emotional haze at the moment. And I am over 30 days into this. Set aside time in your life for this quit. It is not something you can do in just 30 days. Can you quit smoking in 30 days? Sure ... but there will be other 'things' you will have to deal with. Go into it as a wonderful learning experience that will transform you into a even more wonderful person than you already are. Look at the ups and downs in a positive light. Do not think you are giving up cigarettes. You aren't. You are not giving up anything. You are gaining so much more. You are giving yourself wonderful gifts that will unfold each day you do not smoke. You can have a cigarette anytime you want to. The wonderful thing though is that you do not want to ... you are choosing life! You are choosing for your life to be all that it can be. Niks, congratulations on staring the demon down. That rocks! :) Some people have a genetic defect that causes them to metabolize nicotine more slowly than normal people. This is how they are able to become social smokers. It doesn't mean they are any less addicted. It just means they don't experience the levels of withdrawals because they have a sort of natural, built-in NRT mechanism. But eventually they will go through some withdrawal and it sounds like your partner is into that phase. Keep in mind that you are normal and he is genetically abberent. :eg: OK, that sounded much worse than it really is. Sorry. Hey, sounds like the SSC helped you win one. When one wins, we all win. Awesome, isn't it. :) Keep up the good quit, Niks. Nice job Niks. You deserve a reward for that one. Go do something really nice for yourself today. You're gonna make it this quit. I can feel it. You really want it this time and you seem to be owning it. It's all yours and you don't seem to want anyone or anything to take it away. I'd be chuffed as well.
