New fear

Hi, Debra. You haven't said that you were diagnosed with a panic disoreder yet, but Red has a point. However, our site does have information on CBT. First though, I urge you to read http://www.paniccenter.net/about/how/important.cfm and the following pages about getting treatment and what is involved. CBT involves getting active in your treatment. YOu can read up on it here http://www.paniccenter.net/about/living/manage.cfm It might help get a start on things if you start to keep a journal of these attacks.

Debra, First of all you are not being a pest at all. This is something new for you, and part of the problem is not understanding what is going on in your body. Or going on with the mind/body connection, that is causing you this horrible feeling at night. It may be easy for someone to say" don't worry", but that remark would have to come from someone who had never experienced this. If and when I say do not worry..it is to teell you that this is something that can be treated and that you are not alone. Some may have these feelings while walking around town, some at night, some while driving. Everyone is different. I don't know why you are so worried about your boss knowing. I always thought these medical records and dialogues with drs had to be confidential. Oh, maybe I see..you think the boss will see the medical bills and see something having to do with Psych..or psychiatric..or like that.. Well, maybe idf you would explaine that you are having trouble sleeping at night, and you needed to get to a sleep lab for tests, and this is the way you have to go to get there..it may make you not so worried about the reaction you may get. Please go..you can bill the insurance co. later. That way you won't wory more. that would be one thing not in your consideration. I think it wsould be prudent to look up on the Internet, Cognitive Behavior Therapy..and read some about it. There are some very good web sites now describing some of your symptoms, if not all. Knowledge is power..and you might want to do some detective work on your own. You can look up Panic Disorder, Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety Disorder..they are all out there. Let us know what you find. Thanks and hang in there. I hope you feel better soon. Red

Thank you for the replies. I guess when I think about it, my fear is that the insurance company will let my boss know. I've decided not to put it on my insurance for the time being. The Sleep Disorder Clinic is a place I expect the consultant will eventually send me, but first I have to go see him at the Psych Hospital. I was going to forget it altogether, but last night's events were worse than before. I took the test again, thought about the answers and it gave slightly more involved results. My interest though is finding out how people might have dealt with this nighttime stuff, waking up like a bolt in a cold sweat, with a terror I've never known before. I usually get up and take a drink of water or milk, but I don't get calm again. In the morning, I feel as if I've been hit by a bus. I was late for work today, so I know I have to do something about it. How does this cognitive behavior work? Sorry to be a pest qith questions.

Debra, My post was NOT to alarm you, but to allay your fears. You have the right to know where and by whom you are being treated, and what for. There are many Sleep Labs now, most of which are associated wih Medical Centers and Universities. I have a friens as well, who is doing great now. Sleep deprivation is a terrible thing for your body and mind.If I were you, I would do what was suggested by all, and know that they are now making great strides to try to understand and treat these many disorders. I think that you have come this far, why not follow thru with your treatment.I have the utmost respect for my doctors and many professionals I meet with, and they for me. There is no reason why you should not enjoy the very same relationship. Red ;)

Hi, Debra. Stigma in mental health is a difficult issue. However, if something happened that was worrisome enough for you to get medical advice, but you can't follow through with the consultation, why not discuss this further with your doctor who did the referral in the first place? Maybe he can refer you to someone else in a more comfortable setting?

Dear Debra, I absolutely think you did the right thing! The public awareness of mental disorders/phobias/mental illness/panic disorders and the like is 'still in the dark & full of false and uneducated opinions'. Especially if they see 'psychiatric ward€™ or something like that. I would trust very few people with information about what we are going through! Patient/Doctor privacy - Good! Giving too much information out to the 'general public' - Bad! Who wants to be pigeon holed/judged/categorized by someone who does not have a vested interest in us, accept maybe they want money? Hospital/Insurance Companies, etc. It is embarrassing enough at times to just let family and good friends in on this. Not to freak you out at all, just be careful! Bye for now, Maria

Hi Debra, Yes, this can be very scary. Let's figure this out! Like Red said call you Doctor and ask him what is going to happen? Ask him where you are going, what they will be doing, and what the outcome may be. Also, ask the doctor's receptionist or the doctor to set this appointment up for you! Remember they are there for you....that is their job. Make sure that you go to this clinic, cause sleep apena needs to be corrected. I had a family friend that had this fixed and his health is the best it has been in years. If you need anymore advice Debra please don't hesitate to ask. Hope this helped :) Melanie

Debra The only way to know for sure is to ask your doctor EXACTLY where..to what clinic__ he is sending you, and for what test(s).From what I understand about Sleep Apnea, is, they send you to a sleep lab, where they attach some electodes to your body, and hook you up to this machine which monitors the brain waves and the stages of sleep. I never had it done, but a friend did, and it doesn't hurt. The hospital I go to has a separate lab, not in the Psychiatric Institute. Not all Hospitals are the same..so , you could ask your doctor. I do not think sleep testing is a condition that would cause you to lose your job. Lots of people have this. It is a terrible thing...sleep deprivation...you do not function well with little or no sleep. Red

This is going to sound strange to those who've been there maybe, but I'm fighting a new fear. I went to my family doctor and he's referring me to this fellow who works in a psychatric hospital. My doc says that they will probly send me to the sleep disorder clinic there too. Now I know it's for my own good in the long run, if they find something, but when I called to make an appointment and they asked me for my name, they said they were making a card out for me. It hit me then that I would now be registered in the psychiatric system and that scared the hell out of me. I'm afraid of my boss finding out as it could mean my job. So I mumbled something dumb and hung up in fright. How do people deal with this? It stopped me dead from going on.
