I am so glad you are off on the right foot. Always follow drs advice, they know how to do things, when we are caught up in a "jam". This is dr week for me too. Post soon and let us know what's up. :) This message was edited by am on 2-11-02 @ 9:32 PM

I was at the shrink today and mentioned the issue of the parental control to him, his suggestion is to tell them to limit the conversation by saying: "I have to go" in a calm and polite voice over the phone. I just have to be more assertive with them and set some limits as to when I am available. I tend to discuss issues like my employment with my husband more so than with my parents. It's just that they can be a pain! :) However I will do as the shrink suggests regarding assertiveness and being polite with them, but firm. Off to the dentist here.. yuck... laters :) Cerridwyn

Dear Cerri, If I was married, I would want my husband to have the last word in my life (on certain things, of course) - is it necessary that your parents hold precedence over your husband? Just wondering why such a tight parental hold over you when you are a married woman. Bye for now, Maria

Thanks Red :) My parents are just plainly overprotective, period, and my mother has some very old-fashioned ideas as to mental illness, medication and shrinks. Worse yet, she is one of those types who gets all these negative articles about medication or doctors or psychiatrists. Very frustrating to deal with, to say the least. My husband, who is even-tempered and calm, even gets frustrated with her :) Ah, well :) Night all and thanks for your support :) Cerridwyn

I feel better knowing that you are going to the "shrink" as I call all drs that treat what is in our heads. The parental thing is tough.. I had that problem for years, and I will tell you this...to appease them does no good. You must figure out how to cut their power. If they are like mine..loads of money and thought it was God...I had to let them know they could put the money where the sun doesn't shine...it made them no better or worse than anyone else. Maybe they think they made their decisions and they were wrong, and just want to save you from the same thing. Figure out why they think they are the Energizer Bunny..and cut the power supply..change out the batteries..and that will be that. Anyway, since they don't care enough to find out what is troubling you..then why bother letting them know....it is not a win-win situation...but get yourself feeling stronger first..you are who is important here..and please do not forget this. We are here..and we care...Just posrt and speak your mind..vent, holler, cry for help..we are here.. Red

Thanks for the advice all who replied, and thanks maria, for the credo. I just get so frustrated with people (like my parents) who don't seem to understand the situation at all! And thanks Anne-Marie, I've done the anxiety test, and will print it out to show it to the psychiatrist the hospital referred me to. Red: thank you for your post as well, and you're right about too many people having a say in my employment. My family doctor, who prescribed the paxil and is also a corporate doctor as well, suggested it would be best if I resign. My feeling is that I'm the one who has to make the decision to resign or not. I think I'm going to have to learn to be assertive with my parents, though. As for driving, I do not do much of it because of my vision. However, I live in a large city where there is a good public transit system.

Hello. I am still an awe of the fact that little has changed in the last 60 years...It was the same for me when I was an infant and then a child...one with Panic Disorder. I was adopted..that is the excuse I allow for my parents not helping me. Little was known back then, and we have different gene pool. There are still a lot of people who do not understand. Today there is no excuse for people not to take control, as doctors are finding out more all the time about this disease, and how to treat it, Your parents are in denial..like mine were. You have gotten some real good advice..the best of which is to take charge of your medical condition yourself. That will assure that you are getting the very best for you. Mr, B showed you a way to look up drugs yourself, and Maria gave you a "mantra" and a credo to live by. Anne-Marie made you feel at home here and offered the site for your use. We are all here with you..we all have "panic" problems and it will help right away to know that you are not alone. We are here.but this does not take the place of good medical attention. Do you see a Psychiatrist or Psychologist? Or does the general practicioner take care of you still? I do not mean to be "nosey", it's just we have all discussed this and it is good to know how others are being treated and the opinions of the differing You could take some time, during your leave of absence to see what we all are doing for ourselves. It is all posted here. Also, another question: why do so many peole have a say in your employment. I always thought that it was YOU who made that decision. maybe there are too many peoples' opinionss in your way. You cannot make your own decisins? You may have to do what I did..get a grip and tell them this is YOUR decision. What does your dr say? Think about what is best for you.. I love the comparison to the cat..I have felt that way many a time..but not so much anymore. I have worked at desensitizing myself to the driving phobia. Red

Hi Cerri I just did a quick search on "paroxetine, panic and, dose" and found this site http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/paroxetinesystemic202717.html It looks like doses of paroxetine go up to 60 mg or so for panic. I suggest checking around on the web some more and finding out what the recommended dose of paroxetine is. I am sure that there is lots of information out there. If I disgree with a doctor I always get a second opinion. If you have the time and money you might want to see someone to get some CBT. As for unsupportive family. I have had that problem too. It is hard for people who don't have panic to understand how bad it can be. Hopefully you can find other people who will support you. Thats what I had to do. Just "listening in" on this group helps me a lot.

Hi Cerridwyn. Welcome to our site! Sorry to read about your difficulties. I don't know if this is the situation with you, but sometimes people are unsupportive because they are educated about the fact that panic attacks are real and that the person having them is trying to deal with them. Perhaps your parents might look over the excellent information on our site at some time? Maybe you could print out some pages and let them read them if your parents are not online? It might help you to discuss things with your doctor too if you take our online Anxiety test and print it out. It does not diagnose, of course, as only your own health professional can do that, but it may indicate some areas he or she can investigate further in helping you.
