Fear of Failure

Hello everyone! I'm 34 and have been smoking for 22 years. I have quit twice before (cold turkey) in the last 10 years, but only for about 4 months each time. Today I woke up coughing and feeling generally lousy so I started searching for a good "quit smoking" site and found you guys! I read a lot the site and got off my butt and walked to the drug store and bought patches for the first time EVER! This is something that my boyfriend and I have been talking about for the last 3 months but I have decided that I cannot wait for him any longer. It's an empowering event to take control of my life and make things happen for me. I will say that my biggest problem is I am afraid of failing. Had anyone else felt like this? Kind of like, "Well, whats the point, I've tried many times before and couldn't do it and it just makes me feel guilty"? I have set my quit date for tomorrow and I'm excited! -Scara

Hey, today was the first day of my new life and it wasn't that bad. I really built it up in my mind from past experience and at around 11:00 this morning I thought "you know what, I can do this. It is a choice". Good luck and remember that I am going throught the exact same thing as you are. Scara Welcome! Congrats for your decision. Here you'll find a great help to go ahead. And....you're not alone: I think 100% of us has or had the same fear...

I haven't tried quitting for over 17 years because I was afraid that I would fail. I think most of us come into this quit with that fear. For me, I decided to quit one day at a time. If the day is good, I enjoy every moment of it. If the day is rough, I go to bed early. But on the bad days, I just concentrate on my commitment to that day. I'm learning new skills every day and enjoying every milestone. I have found that the support and advice from SCC has been the saving grace which has helped me to keep my quit alive. Welcome to SCC...please post often and let us know how you are doing. Use all of your resources (and the ones on this site). I just bought a book that was recommended to me by more than one member. Haven't read it yet...but they say it is great. I can't give you the name....but it you drive in your "car" to the bookstore and buy it, you might find an "easy" way to quit smoking without fear. Good luck! Don't be fearful of failing, Scara. Fear just loves to mushroom in the perfect environment. Don't give it the satisfaction. Take this journey one day at a time, one minute at a time. And always remember, when the going gets tough - THIS TOO SHALL PASS - It just gets better and better. Hold that thought and you'll be fine!!!! Scara- I was just like you and I am 35yrs and smoked for 20yrs of my life!! That is the reason I did not want quit....cuz I have failed so many times. I hated everything when I quit the last few times. But this time is different and quitting is not horrible. The first 2 weeks I just took it day by day. Now almost 2 months smoke free I really do not even think about it. I did use the nicotine lozenge this time and weened myself off those quick. This time might be different, just be patient with yourself!!!! You can do it! Scara, GREAT decision! Get busy with the tools available to you on the left <---------- preparation is EXTREMLY important. Make plans to keep yourself busy and get some coping mechanisms lined up. Oh, did I mention preparation is KEY???? Seems to me that when you are ready for them, cravings are not as powerful. You are strong and can do this. Let us know how you're doing. Hang out and do a lot of reading today, it's great to know you're NOT alone Scara. Scara, I am so glad you made the decision to quit (again). That is the best thing you could do for yourself. Please, do not dwell on your past attempts. Each and every attempt brings you closer to your 'forever' quit. The only time you will fail is when you quit quitting. Make sure you have completed the tools here. Gather your plan together, reach for your determination, put your positive attitude forward, and gather as much information as possible for you. That is the best start. The key to remaining smoke free is quite simple: N.O.P.E. Not One Puff Ever Please reach out to us! -Scara - Rather than putting energy into the fear of failing, put that powerful and precious energy into Quitting and staying Quit. When I first Quit, I spent a great deal of time here reading old posts and I just gathered info that helped me create the most amazing toolbox of coping skills - THAT is very important. Ya have to have the support in the worst times, so stay close to this site and "gather info" and make a list of distractions in your mind. Distractions are key in a successful Quit. Post often and make sure to ask for support if you feel like lighting up! Oh! And make sure to read about rewards and reward yourself along the way ~ VERY important! You can do this!!
