Hi Parola and good luck, the question of BP is really a matter for a medical professional. As for cutting down, I did that before I quit and did find that it helped, I did not aim for a specific number but I did cut out smoking in the usual trigger places e.g. the car, out for a drink etc. The other thing you can try is when you want to smoke, delay having one for say 30 minutes or even an hour. Quitting can happen. As for raising your BP, you could try getting angry...LOL that won't help anyone. I don't know that it will be a problem, but does it really matter if you are a little slow and sluggish for a while if it gets you past the smoking? Hi Parola, welcome to SCC. This half-sleepy state you refer to is due to being deprived of a substance you have been addicted to - nicotine. Nothing can replace it, though the patches may help as they still administer nicotine to your system. I didn't use patches myself, but even if you do then you will still have to go through nicotine deprivation when you come off the patches. The good news is, the half-sleepy state actually is only at its worst for the first few days without your drug, then it will get better as all the nicotine leaves your system. At this point you may want to smoke again because it is a comfort thing more than anything, but it will not make you feel better because (1) You don't want to smoke, that's why you quit. (2) You are no longer physically addicted to nicotine so you will not be relieving any physical need, a cigarette will just make you become addicted again. Good luck! Parola, You can use the SSC IM Messenger to contact members individually for support and knowledge. Use the program to assist you in quitting and cutting back. You can also change your daily routine to avoid the usual cigarette at a certain point in the day. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.

Parola, This would be something that only your doctor can advise you. As moderators we are unable to give this type of medical advice. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.

Parola, When you first quit or cut down, you may find it difficult to sleep as long as you used to. Two things can cause this are: As a smoker your sleep may have been interrupted by constant coughing and/or difficulty breathing. When you stop smoking, your body gets healthier and the sleep you get is more restful. So if you wake up suddenly at 5:00 a.m., you may think you are a victim of insomnia. You're probably not! Your body has probably had all the sleep it needs. Smoking drains your body's energy. When you quit smoking you regain this energy. You may need fewer hours of sleep. How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting. Tips to help: Try making sure you have a regular sleeping schedule. If you wake up in the middle of the night do some light stretches, or read a book to help you get to sleep. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.
