Polictics and Wellbutrin and United Health(NO)Care

18 years ago 0 1262 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi my new best friends I am wondering if anyone has gone up against United Health(no)Care about paying for Wellbutrin. I have been on Wellbutrin since January 15th. My doc gave me a bunch of samples and a script with 6 refills of 60 pills each. United Health(NO)Care keeps on turning down paying for this drug. They say we need a preauthorize and my doc calls that in and they say again we need the preauthorize. Now I can't get me doc to call a 3rd time, they are like sorry, we tried. So I have this script that is worthless. To pay cash ($237) is out of the question, as my health care costs are reaching $1000 since January 2006 (Because of smoking) I am now out of samples. I am depressed.......I really need the wellbutrin. I am afraid I will fall off the wagon any minute now. Any suggests how to get United Health(NO)Care to pay up?? OR any suggestions of a replacement drug United Health(NO)care will pay for or an herbal remedy that acts like wellbutrin?? Please don't suggest the patch, been off that for a couple of weeks and do not want to reintroduce nicotine to my body. I know wellbutrin worked for me as I was sooo happy about my quit and had only a few cravings, now I am CONSTANTLY thinking about smoking and I am not HAPPY about the quit. Oh also it was my primary doc who gave me the script. Yesterday I got a call from the lung doc office to come in today for the results of my lung biopsy. I asked them to just give me the results and they said it was against their policy. I believe it against them not wanting to pass up another $25 copay. Also I had mentioned to the lung doc last appointment problem with the script, and I was about to run out but he didnt budge to help. I see him at 2pm today (the lung doc) Thanks!! Dear Josie Thanks for the advice. I sort of got it resolved for the moment. The Lung doc actually was not able to write the script because he said too many times his scripts are turned down as a lung doc would prescribe Zyban for a patient to stop smoking. Zyban is not covered by insurance. Like you Josie, he was able to offer advise to help me try and get this resolved and he helped me make a plan. I made an appointment with my primary care doc for 2 weeks from today. I am also doing homework about getting a name at United Healthcare and I already have the same time set up with a Pharmacist and we are going to have a 3 way. (heeheehee) The Pharmacist said it, not me!! So I have an appointment with the doc, a time set up with the Pharmacist and we will do the call and get the "pre-authorization" needed to get this script filled. Then I will not have to go through that again for a year! And my lung doc gave me a couple of scripts to fill today and highly recommended I just pay cash for 2 weeks supply of the Wellbutrin I need until this is resolved and I have done that. So I am medicated again. Everyone can come out now. LOL Thanks Josie for the great advice....it got me in a direction to get this resolved. Dear Hyriel Thanks for remembering me. That is just too cool!! Yep, got the results of the biopsy and I do not have the "c" word. It turns out the mass in my lungs is scar tissue caused by emphysema. Further, upon investigation.....it is not a huge surprise that I have this condition totally caused by smoking for more then 3 decades. As long as I don't ever smoke again, this smokers disease is manageable. Thanks Hyriel!! and iwin Thanks for your insight Did you ever get the drugs or get a replacement drug???? Yes my doc did say for depression. I did go and buy myself 2 weeks time but it cost me $100!!! I sent my husband and credit card to pick up the drugs, I would have left the script there if I knew. But......1 week from today I see the doc and will try to once and for all get this resolved. Thanks hyriel and iwin! Hi Kare, Good for you!! These insurance companies will be the death of us!! I am glad to hear that you stuck to your guns and are working toward a resolution!! I know I wrote to you a week or two ago when you had made the appt. to go for the biopsy. I'm almost afraid to ask because I really want the news to be good... what were the results? I pray you got good news! Please let us know how this all works out. I used to have United Healthcare but supposedly Oxford just took them over, so now I have Oxford. If "it" gets really bad, I was thinking of asking my doc for a scrip for Wellbutrin and am wondering if I will have to go thru the same crap you are going thru. So, I would be interested to find out what happens. Give 'em hell darlin!!! You need to take care of you! Hang in there!! Please let us know how you're doing. I had the same problem with United Healthcare and Wellbutrin. I didn't have a preauthorization problem they just flat turned it down. They will not pay for wellbutrin if you say you are taking it to quit smoking. At least that is what they told me. They will pay for it if you are using it for depression I would assume. Hi Karen, No I did not get a replacement drug. This was in 2004 and I tried to quit without it and ended up smoking again. This time I used the patch and am doing great. I am glad he said it was for depression. I think they don't want to pay for it for smoking because the precentage of people have such a hard time staying quit so they feel like it is a waste of money. Not fair to the people who are going to say quit though. Insurance can't live with 'em and can't live without 'em. Kare, Stay firm with your doctor. They need to communicate with United Health and solve the problem. This is your health you are dealing with. Check again with your doctor and don't leave until that pre-authorization is accepted on the other side. You also have 44 days under your belt, and you can continue to do this. Use your coping mechanisms to help you through and visit the site often. Keep Strong, Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
