Jef . . . I'm on my way to being a "quitter," and I also need much support. We both NEED to do this to live healthier, more active lives. Heck, who are we kidding . . . we're really not living right now at all! We're surviving from day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute on an addiction that is controlling us. I look back on my life, which hasn't been the best but certainly hasn't been the worst either. I've faced many fears, met many challenges, and succeeded on many different levels. Still, these little cigarettes are now controlling ME! I'm lost without them? Good grief. I can relate to your depression. I KNOW it hurts. I've been through a painful divorce, had my son choose to live with his father for awhile (he's back with me now, because he wants to be . . . and that's a true blessing), watched my fiance die in my arms from an overdose of prescription medication (2002 . . . he was a promising attorney with a heart so generous I feel I'll never find anyone to compare), taken care of my mother through painful cancer treatments last year, and watched my father's health decline as well. I can count my true friends on one hand (minus several fingers). Still, I'm blessed. I didn't always feel this way, Jef. I struggled and suffered in pain. But I see a bit more clearly now that I'm alive. Dark days will always be around. I'm sure you have many of these, and I know your health issues must influence your moods considerably. Maybe we can develop a way of viewing this quitting process . . . together . . . in order to WIN. I sometimes think (quite often, actually) that I turn my back on my blessings (spit at them, really) by smoking. I take my strengths and weaken them by smoking. I take my life and reduce it to a meaningless state by smoking. I know this sounds melodramatic, but I really feel that strongly about what I've done to myself with cigarettes. We're all blessed to wake up in the morning. You are, too. Let's do this!!! Let's open our hearts and let the "good stuff" come in! :-) I'm here daily now, and my quit day is tomorrow. I'm here to help and, as you can see, so are SO many others!!! You're not alone. :-) Kendall

Jef, Can't say I've heard of this particular quit aide...but there is nothing new to the concept. It's called aversion therapy. Pavlov, a Russian physiologist who is best known for discovering this type of conditioned response, won a 1904 Nobel Prize for his research. Thankfully, since that time, we have learned that POSITIVE reinforcement is far and away more effective a method for changing negative behavior. There is no quick, easy, painless method for getting rid of the cigarettes. Furthermore, I personally would be reticent about putting yet another chemical in your system...especially given the serious health troubles you are currently experiencing. The most powerful force you have within very easy reach...is your brain. Everyone here has said it...Attitude is the key! You get that from reprogramming your thoughts and actions to obtain the results you desire. Sounds simpke? Oh no...you have to go after every single solitary defeatist notion that comes along. It's work, hard work. But boy is it SOOOO worth it! Whatever you decide...SSC and all of its members are here to help when you are ready. Jef, I understand where u are coming from. I want to quit also. I the same problem you do. I smoke about a pack a day. I want to quit to live a longer life. I also have tried all of the NRT's and quit aids I could find. However, I have quit before for about 2 years and like a Jackass picked them back up when I was finishing my degree. I do know however when I quit this time I am done forever. I now know what it takes to live smoke free N.O.P.E. I will win the war, although I have lost many battles. You can do it to Jef....

I have tried so many times to quit, I can hardly count them up. I can't seem to find the right method that will actually work. I guess it is just easier to smoke than to take on the battle. I have painful health issues and clinical depression and take alot of prescription meds. I know I would feel better if I could quit smoking. I recently have started a nasty cough that is really awful. There is a constant tickle in my throat. My doctor gave me a prescription for a cough suspressant that works really good. I have taken it for over a month now and as soon as I try to go without it I start to cough all over again. My chest actually aches from all the coughing. Recently, I got an email ad for a Smoking Quit Aid called "Final Smoke." It is supposed to make you nauseous and sick feeling if you smoke. Some who use it reported vomitting if they cheated and smoked while taking it. You take it once daily at bedtime so you wake up with it kicked in gear. If you smoke, you get sick. Maybe that is what I need to finally give this stupid habit up for good. But I would sure like to hear from someone who has actually tried it before I spend my money on another attempt. Currently, I smoke almost 2 1/2 to 3 packs a day. I think about smoking all the time. The car won't start without a cigarette, will it? The phone doesn't work without a cigarette, does it? A soothing bath wouldn't be soothing without a cigarette, would it? My husband smokes too. I am so afraid he will kick the habit before I can and then I will be the one everyone will be looking at and wondering why I am so cruel to smoke in front of him. I have tried everything, including cold turkey, patches, gum, patches and gum, Zyban, hypnotisum, filters, the time machine, acupuncture, tapering off and even have been offered quite a bit of money from family if I quit. What else is there? I need something, but I am beginning to think there is nothing strong enough to help me. Maybe having depression and pain problems makes it even harder to find a solution. I am on total disability because of my depression and pain so I am at home most of the time. I should be able to do this, I know. I get so disgusted with myself and hate that I am so weak, but even that doesn't make it happen. I th

Hello Jef, Well, thank you for posting. That is an attempt for help. Have you done the tools to the left yet? They do offer insight and thought about your addiction. Even if you are not quite ready to quit, at least try out the tools. They give you something to think about. As far as you quitting, I agree with Rusty and Bubba. Your "excuses" for not quitting, are just that. Excuses. I have made a million myself. And then some. If you prepare yourself for your quit, the "battle" is not so bad. You cannot give in. Simple? Yes. You will have to fight the urge. And fight hard. But, after the nicotine is out of your system, the battle is just within you. It's all about knowledge, preparation, determination, and attitude. You have to think positively. That is what you should consentrate on right now. No more excuses. No more self-hatred. You are an addict. Nothing else. We all are. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. You are the only one who can change. You have the power to change your life!! You and only you, is the one who can change your choices and your thoughts. Beyond that, you have to tell yourself you will do anything to stay quit. You will do anything to fight that next craving. But "trying" just doesn't cut it. You know that. You just have to do it. Don't be scared of the battle. The battle is only as hard as you let it be. Jef, I used the "Final Smoke" sysem - twice... The first time when I used them, I ended up smoking and it made me feel sick but it didn't stop me from smoking. Needless to say, I didn't succeed to quit. This last time I ordered the kit more or less by misstake. I was kind of suprised when the kit was delivered to my home and I thought that I should returned it since it is expensive. In the same time - I was so tired of smoking and after watching the package for a week I decided to give it a new chance. This time I followed all the instructions and listening to the CD for a whole week before my quit-day. After listening to the CD for a week I was really convinced that I never wanted to smoke again, it's now 69 days ago and I haven't take one puff! I used the pills for a month and I do believe they helped with the cravings to some degreed. I agreed with the other posters; Only you can quit and your willing to quit needs to be stronger than your urged to smoke. My theory is if you can get through a single day without smoking you can quit. I mean from the time you get up to going to sleep. If you can do that you have proved to your inner self ( the one buddy you can't hide from) that you can survive without a cigarette. Don't think of quitting for the rest of your life. It too big a concept to digest. Just think about quitting for ONE DAY. You will be amazed how that can help you quit for two days. Be positive in the knowledge that you will be a better person for not smoking. I wish you great success. Jef, I appreciate your honesty. All of your reasons you've given to continue to smoke are the same ones we have all told ourselves... before we quit smoking. First off, realize you are an addict. Smoking is not just a bad habit, it is also an addiction. And it has to be treated as such. Go through the program tools on the left. Do the exercises in there. It will help you firm up your reasons for quitting. It will help you come up with coping tools. It will help you decide on the best stop-smoking aid for you (whether patches or gum, etc). Print out the information you come up with and take it to your doctor with you. Let them help you come up with a comprehensive plan to quit! About the NRTs or other stop-smoking aids... they HELP you quit. But they cannot quit for you. You have to do the quitting. You have to be committed to seeing it through. The NRT's will help ease the nicotine withdrawals, but they don't help with the emotional/psychological part. This site can help with that, but you have to make the commitment to come here and post when we're needed. You CAN do this Jef! Please work the program and work with your doc. Stick around here and read, read, read! And set that quit date! Then be determined to get through it one day at a time! We CAN do this! Now what? Now is the time to get a yellow highlighter, print out what you just wrote, and highlight every single time you made an excuse or you said a negative thing. Let me help you a little.
I guess it is just easier to smoke than to take on the battle.

The car won't start without a cigarette, will it? The phone doesn't work without a cigarette, does it?

Simply having a buddy isn't going to be enough, cause I can hide from a buddy.
Please look at your language. Is it the language of someone who loves herself and wants the best for herself? Or is it the language of someone who is willing to sabotage every good thing that could happen for her by thinking so negatively? There are people on this site who have had parents die, spouses die, before or in the middle of their quits. So don't tell anyone on this site that quitting isn't possible. Truly, there is no aid - patches, gum, laser, hypnotism, herbs -- that can make you quit until you decide to quit. Once you commit yourself to face the fear and the truth about your addiction, there is nothing that can stop you. Please know that quitting is doable. You just have to make up your mind to do it. And this site can help you. Give us a chance.
