Bad attitude

I'm over 5 weeks into my quit and it finally happened. I ran into a friend that smoked yesterday afternoon. We were standing there talking and he lit up. I had no problem with it and I mentioned I had quit smoking. Up til now, every time I've said that to someone I've gotten an atta boy, not this time. He looked at me and asked why? I was literally dumbfounded. I said because it's good for me. He reminded me that I had smoked for years and years and then he said the damage is already done. He then said we all have to die someday anyway. Then he proceeded to say that smoking takes ten years off your life, and that it's the ten years you spend in a nursing home in diapers anyway. He told me I'd be smoking again before to long and went on his way. I thought for a few moments and you know what? MY MIND REJECTED EVERY BIT OF THAT CRAP. Sure damage has been done but I am healing. I don't need to keep doing damage and compounding it. Ten years in a nursing home? Only if I don't take care of myself and keep tearing myself down with destructive habits like smoking. I'll be smoking again before to long? Not on your life. I came to the conclusion I was talking to a junkie. He had a totally defeatist attitude and you know what? That's not where my head is at. He's still my friend, I wont avoid him at all, but I wont take part in his way of thinking. I've moved beyond that. I know better. Has anyone had an experience like this? What did you do or think? let me know. Good 4u cybrduke for realizing it was the junkie in your friend talking. Be careful in slippery spots and around friends that don't look out for your best interests. You have to change in order to not be the same person cuz the same person will smoke again. Sometimes we outgrow our friends and stop hanging around with them so much b/c we realize they're not good for us. That doesn't mean we don't care about them. And eventually our friends either grow with us or they slowly slip away or in some cases die (too soon) :( Ok,,,so I'm making it through today :) Look already giving advice, lol. Tks to my friends here! And many tears and some pizza and GOD! :) No matter what don't lite up... Keep on keepin on... I hope the new smoke-free you rubs off on your friend :) It definitely can't hurt anything. When he see's the glow in your face and the smile and the new good smelling...free from being a slave to the poisen filled cancer sticks,,,hopefully one day he'll want to get a taste of the good life too :) It's ok to let him know how good you feel and how happy u are that u quit :) Infact b/c he's your friend I hope u tell him :) It can't hurt him to know that you care about him & there's always a tactful way to do it :) Either way u keep up the good work!

Celebrate your new way of thinking!!!! you are SO RIGHT!!! your friend is a junky and is making lame excuses and using false reasoning to back up the fact that he sucks on buring weeds cause his addiction demands that he do so!! I was there for years and I used some of those same excuses.....and I gotta say that I knew in my heart they were lies! You are in a position that he would LOVE to be in....don't be deceived!
