Cigarettes Not Smoked

I don't know if this will help you, but it has helped me in numerous situations. It is a little saying that goes like this 'fake it till you make it'. In other words there are situations in life we may not like or may find difficult. So instead of trying to FORCE yourself to change how you think, you tell yourself to fake it till you make it. By faking it, you are not having to fight yourself. It tricks your brain to think you that you have given it 'it's way', but really you haven't. Then as some time passes with you faking it ... you'll see that new habits have developed without you even realizing that they have .... and before you know it you will no longer be faking it, you be making it! It is so true that you have to really WANT to quit. Faking it till you make it can help get you there ... it did for me. That little phrase has helped me have a positive attitude through so many things in life that I would have otherwise been so negative about. But because I started the journey faking it ... before I knew it I was making and SUCCEEDING! Don't give up ... you can do it ... and if you need to fake it today so that you can make it tomorrow ... so be it. What's important is the end result ... and that is being smoke free for life! Keep up the good fight on staying quit! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Well feeling like this is not going to work for me. I have been on wellbutren for two weeks now, and am smoking more than use to. Waiting for that desire to not want a cig. I have been smoking for 23 years, 24hours a day since I was 14 years, I am now 43. I am a single dad with a 5 year old daughter who wants me not to smoke anymore.God I don,t want to break her heart, and I want to be around to see her grow up, but at the rate I am going I would be lucky to last 5 more years. I have been in a 12 step program since I was 29, so I have been clean and sober for about 16 years, but am I really, since I have not stoped putting the drug nicotine into my system. Any advice would be appeciated, thanks Mr Mom

Well it,s been a few days since comming online, with my story. Still Smoking? God I hate this addiction. Thank you to everyone who has offered thair advice,I am reading them, and they do keep me on track to want to stop. The other day,I walked with my daughter hand in hand to get a slurpee, and made the mistake of telling her that I was going to finish the cigs that I have and not have anymore, and you could see that she was excited. An hour went by,had that last cig,and soon after, was asking my daughter to come to the store with me. The whole trip took 10 minitues, and I knew that I was about to break my 5 year olds heart. I asked the casher for a pack of demuera and heard my baby say dad you said that you wern,t going to have any more ciggeretts? I waited untill we got out of the store, and I could feel the tear,s well up inside myself,as I looked at her and tried to justify why I didn,t keep my word. God I hate this addiction. My baby is only 5 so she really doesn,t understand,Yet I know that she feels disapointed in her dad, and probly thinks everytime she see,s me light up another cig that I didn.t keep my promise. Now every time I pick up a cig I can,t help but think about how I am letting myself, and my kid down. So I keep reading the support letter,s and hoping that I will come to that thought where I want to stop again. Until that time I am smoking, and not having a fun time doing it. Your support is helpful thank you all. MR MOM

Hiya Mr. Mom First off, congratulations on your desire to quit. Coming here and looking for help is a huge step. The idea of quitting smoking was, for me, VERY scary. Understand, I'm just some other guy who quit a few weeks ago. However, something in your post really jumped out at me:
"Waiting for that desire to not want a cig. "
If you are waiting for that desire to suddenly show up either due to the medication or something else, I don't know that you will ever find it. That desire HAS to come from YOU. No where else. YOU have to want to quit. YOU have to beleive - to KNOW you can quit. It's scary. It's an unknown. But it can be accomplished. You can do this. As someone else pointed out - you just have to want to quit more than you want to smoke. Crave the quit. Crave the desire to live. WANT to be free. Mr Mom, Congratulations on your decision to quit! Before I started my quit I believed that I was a confirmed smoker. (This is my first Quit - after 30 years!) I now believe that I will NEVER smoke another cigarette - this has been achieved through self-belief and the help of this site. Every smoker has the potential motivation to quit - the opportunity to improve one's health and well-being. Those of us who are luck enough to have loved ones in our lives, we have an extra reason to be motivated! Wishing you well Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 94 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,834 Amount Saved: 705 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 17 Mins: 57 Seconds: 21

Yes, you have been sober...don't take anything away from your accomplishments! You have come a long way in 16 years, huh? Your in the right place for support but you have to want it as well. Trust me, we all want you to succeed but in the end its really up to you!! Think how proud your daughter would be if her daddy quit smoking, she would be the happiest little girl on earth! And she would have her daddy around longer. She is 5 years old and she needs you for a long time to come. She'll need you at her graduation, wedding, when she has children (your grandchildren)!! I only say this because that is exactly what made me take the first step to quitting! I love ME and I want to be around but even more I love my son and I refuse to miss all these important events because I couldn't control myself from smoking! I can't find the post but I thought this was so powerful that I want to share. A wise member posted this and it really hit a chord DEEP down for me. I read it on day 2 and here I am getting through day 4 now! I will not give up!! Anyhow, here it is Quitting Smoking is Easy! ~ Easier than hearing your doctor say, "I'm sorry . . ." ~ Easier than breathing through tubes up your nose. ~ Easier than having a Tracheotomy. ~ Easier than your child seeing you die from cancer. ~ Easier than losing a friend . . . or a friend losing you. ~ Easier than laying in the hospital having radiation treatment. ~ Easier than laying in the hospital wishing you could feel the sun. ~ Easier than listening to your loved ones crying outside your hospital room. ~ Easier than preparing for your funeral because the cancer has gone so far. ~ Easier than picking out your favorite songs for your funeral. ~ Easier than trying to say the right words because they will be your last. ~ Easier than not seeing your child's face because of blindness. ~ Easier than looking out the window knowing you can't go there anymore. ~ Easier than changing your retirement plans. ~ Easier than imagining your spouse being alone. ~ Easier than going through your photo album with tears. ~ Easier than telling your child you are dying young because you smoked. ~ Easier than realizing smo

Hi there Mr. Mom!! I am glad you found your way here! Your story made me tear up! I am extremely sensitive to anything that has to with parents/children! So, where do I start? How about picturing this.......... You can make that choice. Only you. You say you are waiting for that desire to not smoke to kick in?? You have to make it. I believe that what X-Smoker said is true. Fake it till you make it. I made it this far doing just that. I have my freedom back. Make yourself believe that you are quitting. Just for now, don't light that next cig. Do anything...... but don't smoke. Take it one cig at a time. Make it a choice to not have that one. And don't look beyond that moment. Do NOT sit and dwell on that craving though. Get up and out, drink water, and get onto this site!! Post your feelings and wait for 5 responses. But again, do not think about letting your thoughts wonder....... Take the control back. Make it a choice. Carry around a picture of your daughter, and keep it as your inspiration. Every time you feel like lighting up, look into her eyes. You don't want to do that to her. To have her see you take your last struggling breath, is painful! Don't make a burden of yourself to your child. She is just a child. Your child. Gather her for your motivation, and spend some quality time together. Sign up for a father-daughter class. She will love anything you do with her. Stay strong. There is no magic pill to ease this. You can make it as hard as you want, or as easy as you want. It is up to you. We will be here for you! Cheering for you! Just reach out to us! ;) 4my2girls What Consumes Your Thoughts Controls Your Life My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 74 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,235 Amount Saved: $241.98 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 23 Mins: 55 Seconds: 27

Hi mr mom and a warm welcome! YES, you CAN do this... You have gotten some great advice here on this thread. This is the kind of support you will find here, amazing eh? Just keep focused, stay in the moment, and maybe spend some time soul searching about WHY you want/need to Quit. It's tough stuff, but ya know what's really amazing? We are all doing it. Some how, each day, we hold ourselves and each other up, as we face this terrible addiction. Stay close, ask for help when you need it... YOU CAN DO THIS! MM- Islandgirl gave you some great advice. This is one hell of an addiction. It's terrible, it's stronger than cocaine (I know this to be true) and it's probably going to be the hardest thing you have EVER done or will EVER do. PERIOD. And I am lead to say to you: IT'S A CHOICE. Truly, you have to want to Quit more than you want to smoke. And the bad news it that until that happens for you, until you get there, you will not put them down for good. FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS... If I had one word that in my experience, supports a successful Quit, it's FOCUS (for me anyway). And smoking is not and never will be an option for me. I'm done with that nasty habit that could have killed me. Do some soul searching dear one. Go deep. What does your soul say? Your daughter is a great motivator, but you cannot Quit for anyone but you. We are here, we will here. Just ask for what you need, dear one. FOCUS... LOOK FOR FOCUS... Why are you quitting, make a huge long list, write it all down. Take time. This is your life!
