I want to be a social smoker

18 years ago 0 989 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
oh me too! I would LOVE to be a social smoker. It would be fun to just smoke while travelling. And when I have a coffee after dinner. And just one with a morrning latte with a friend. And maybe one at a bar with a margarita. Just one between gardening jobs. Just a few when sitting on the porch or patio with friends. Sorry to burst your bubble. For addicts there is no such thing as being a social smoker. Any more than an alcoholic can just drink at parties. There is no shame in being an addict. This took alot for me to accept. There is pride in understanding and accepting what you are. ONLY after I accepted the depth of my addiction was I able to quit. ONLY after I realized that I can NEVER have another puff, not ONE!!!, did I begin to realize the rewards of freedom. The freedom is delicious. But you have to stop smoking to quit. Thanks everyone for your input. Ive been struggling with the smoking thing for 35 years. The longest Ive quit is 5 years. I quit many times a year in the 30 years. Sometimes just for a few days or a few weeks up to a couple of months. I stay quit more than I stay smoking. Im trying to be a social smoker. Its a struggle. So far Ive been smoke free since I came from California. I went to Europe for a couple of weeks in Feb and they smoked in every restaurant, bar, on the streets, everywhere. I gave in and smoked those two weeks. Quit when I got home. Its always hard to quit, but its really great to start smoking after you havent smoked for a while. Im in charge. Thats why I got rid of that pack in my purse as soon as I posted the last post. Im not going to smoke again until I travel to Europe and that wont be anytime in the near future. Im in charge, not my addiction, not anymore. Thanks you all for your valuable input. Reading your posts help keep me determined to be in charge of my addictions. This is my 4th day without smoking since I smoked that pack in California. I dont miss it, but find it interesting when my addict self is thinking/reasoning with the me in control self. The conversation is always the same and really stupid. The reason I want to be a social smoker is because I miss smoking with other people that smoke. I miss sneaking off somewhere to have a smoke and the conversations that otherwise would not happen. I like the sensation of that first cigarette after I havent had one in a long time. I like the feeling of just letting down and not giving a sh about anything. Tonight I wanted to go meet a friend I havent seen in months at a Tavern in town and then remembered that he smokes and turned around and came here to this support group. I realized that Im not that much in control that I trust myself to be in a bar where people smoke right now. I dont like it. I hate that I cant do what I want to do in fear of smoking. The reason I dont smoke all the time is obvious, I dont want to be an addict, I dont want to smell, be controlled by cigarettes, dont want to spend my money that way and I want to be healthy. Cigarettes get in the way of the life style I want to live. I know I sound like Im contradicting myself and thats because I am. I think there are a few personalities residing in this one body and Im trying to make peace with them. I know Im an addict and perhaps Ill be able to give it up once and for all, I just dont know. All I know right now is that Im not a smoker, Im an ex-smoker that might smoke again when I travel. I understand very well what all of you are saying and I know you are right, its just damned hard to accept it. Thank you all for your posts, I really appreciate them.

I went to California for a few days and smoked a pack of cigarettes. I have a whole pack in my purse unopened and am struggling with not opening it. I want to be in control. I dont want cigarettes to control me. I want to be a social smoker and only smoke when traveling. I dont know if I can do it. Im going to take that pack and return it to the store. Im in control here, not my addiction. Im not going on another trip anytime soon, so if I manage to stay quit until then, Im good. Everytime you smoke, you are putting the addictive substances back in your body. That means you never get "smober" -- you're constantly going through withdrawals. You need to want to quit more than you want to smoke. That's when you'll be successful. as nicotine addicts, most of us on here know there is no such thing as "social smoking"....you can't bargain with nicotine addiction. giving it "some" only makes it scream for "more" Let the fact that you are struggling with thoughts about the unopened pack be an "eye opener" you may consider yourself to be in control by keeping that pack and not opening it......I can about guarantee you at some point you are going to loose the control. The smart thing to do is get RID of the pack....and forget about being a 'social smoker'.....anyone who really makes the choice to quit, will realize that smoking "occasionally" will not work. if you are really in control??.....you will trash those smokes and forget about so called "social smoking" Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1542 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 61,715 Amount Saved: $8481 Life Gained: Days: 201 Hrs: 5 Mins: 58 Seconds: 7

4, The cigarette itself contains all the toxins and nicotine is the addictive substance that keeps you hooked. The choice of control is yours. But so is the choice of health and well being. Great to see the nicodemon has nothing on you! Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
