One of my favs. Good to remember. Rusty wrote another one on relaxation, but Ive lost the link. Ill try to find it later. Not cravin', never cavin'. Cigarettes Not Smoked

[quote"If you want to break out of a bad mood, you must first understand that every type of negative feeling results from a specific kind of negative thought."
Some very smart words by David Burns: Many people believe that their bad moods result from factors beyond their control. They ask, "How can I possibly feel happy? My girlfriend rejected me. Women always put me down." Or they say, "How can I feel good about myself? Im not particularly successful. I dont have a glamorous career. Im just an inferior person, and thats reality." Some people attribute their blue moods to their hormones or body chemistry. Others believe that their sour outlook results from some childhood event that has long been forgotten and buried deep in their unconscious. Some people argue that its realistic to feel bad because theyre ill or have recently experienced a personal disappointment. Others attribute their bad moods to the state of the world the shaky economy, the bad weather, taxes, traffic jams, the threat of nuclear war. Misery, they argue, is inevitable. Of course theres some truth in all of these ideas. Our feelings undoubtedly are influenced by external events, by our body chemistry, and by conflicts and traumas from the past. However, these theories are based on the notion that our feelings are beyond our control. If you say, "I just cant help the way I feel," you will only make yourself a victim of your misery and youll be fooling yourself, because you can change the way you feel. If you want to feel better, you must realize that your thoughts and attitudes not external events create your feelings. You can learn to change the way you think, feel, and behave in the here-and-now. To illustrate the important relationship between your thoughts and your moods, consider the many ways you might react to a compliment. Suppose I told you, "I really like you. I think youre a neat person." How would you feel? Some people would feel pleased and happy. Others might feel sad and guilty. Some people would feel embarrassed, and some would react with anger and annoyance. What explains such different reactions? Its because of the different ways they might think about the compliment. In each case the external event the compliment is the same. T

N2K This thread is wonderful and there are so many things that I relate to. Speaking to someone about what is going on with me, is a huge stress reliever, speaking to another human being about what is "up" or "down" with us is also a huge part of relieving that veil of depression that can hang over us. As I was reading this thread, the part about mantras and meditaion, I thought of "talisman" I wear a particular ring and this ring allows for me to touch it and it is always there to remind me of an agreement I made. A subtle and soft way of reminding me of my commitment. I find that wearing on object or having an object to hold will help to bring me down and get me back level. Thanks for this N2K there is a lot of meat here in this and I am favoritizing it and documentizing it for future referal. I hope as you find new ways to relieve stress that you will continue to share. Thanks. Cheers Phillip :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 92 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,846 Amount Saved: $690 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 1 Mins: 5 Seconds: 19

The personal issues that have come up over the past 24 hrs is really occupying my mind and I can't shake it. YOu might say things are really a mess right now. Thanks very much for your encouragement it rally means something to me. Tom

thanks, N2k - I think we all live and deal with so much stress in our lives, we have completely forgotten how to "de-stress". Excellent advice!! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/19/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 55 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 825 Amount Saved: $371.25 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 23 Mins: 14 Seconds: 22

Thank you N2K. I think the Mantra is the safest bet for me. I don't trust myself with putting anything in or near my mouth, for sure I will chew it! Thanks also for letting me know that this is yet another one of those times where Nicodemon is playing his games with me. I truely thought I was starting to lose control, and my mind!

This bump could not have been more timely. I came so close to losing my quit today it was scary. After a long and unpleasant medical procedure, and another one tomorrow, I so wanted one! So, I need to go back to square one and figure out a better way to manage my stress. But in the interim, I need a substitute for, not cigs, but clenching my teeth, chewing gum, or cinammon sticks, or caramels, or my fingernails, or pens. I have serious jaw problems and am being forced into a soft diet with NO CHEWING. Any suggestions on what to do with my mouth while I am relearning all of this stress management stuff? Guess I could start smacking my lips? Has anyone else developed such a dysfunctional substitute for smoking? "I will not smoke, I will not smoke, I will not smoke!" My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/16/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 172 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,074 Amount Saved: $1135.2 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 6 Mins: 46 Seconds: 29
