Rissa, As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your bodys Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process. They are first paralyzed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus. These symptoms can last day or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable. It is day 4 for me, and I woke up this morning and coughed up an excessive amount of green "stuff." I have a sore throat and am super tired as well. I am excercising like twice a day which is a lot for me, so I may be making myself sick. What I am wondering is, does everybody have a period where they just hack stuff up and just feel generally sick (not counting feeling bad about cravings)? Does anyone have an idea when I am supposed to have my lungs clear of the green stuff? I probably will go to the doctor, cause it was fairly excessive today (to the point of throwing up). Since about last year I have coughed up stuff in the mornings almost every day. I just hoped it would like all come up once I quit. It would be great to wake up and not have to cough stuff up. Sorry if I am grossing people out! Thanks for the advice. Hey RissoRoo ! You sound like you may have a sinus infection or some kind of infection.. ex-roller may be right. Smokers usually have more sinus problems and some on an ongoing basis. A course of antibiotics may make it all go away. Now wouldn't that be cool !! I spit up yellowish stuff in the beginning and then had a blackened tougue and spit up black stuff for 2 days. I started coughing somewhere in the beginning and am still coughing off and on. I like to cough because I know it is just my lungs trying to clear. This may sound pathetic but, I felt as though even 24 hours without smoking improved my ability to to breath more deeply. Today, I feel as though the world is full of air for the breathing.. silly thing to say but, it feels that way now. Take care of yourself.. you have a great future of not smoking ahead of you. My whole problem was a terrific cough. When I quit I stopped coughing up "stuff" probably because I coughed up plenty of "stuff" all along! The first two days, though, I thought I would never stop coughing. It sounds like you might have something else going on. How's the nose? If that's leaky too, you probably do have something else going on.

The combination of quitting and excessive exercise may have given you an infection. It's normal to cough up stuff when you quit and it's very common for endurance athletes to get upper respiratory infections. Go see a doctor to be safe. If they can give you some Zithromax or other antibiotic you should start feeling better within a couple days. Also ask the doc if you should lay off the workouts and if so for how long. Congrats on your quit! If it's green it could be you have a chest infection - go see your doctor. I hacked up plenty, but not green stuff. You also mention a sore throat - you should see your doc, yeah My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 37 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 452 Amount Saved: 44.4 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 23 Mins: 46 Seconds: 27

I know they say on here you do cough up some stuff at first, I was lucky and never did. But if your concerned go ask your doctor. Congratulations on your 4 days quit, that is awesome. Don't forget a reward for yourself.
