Does Your State provide this?

Forthe11thtime, Interesting thread. I'm sure we would all like to know the stats here. Take Care, Melanie _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Oh and I see people are talking prices - down under it's $9.50 for the cheapest pack of 20's and $12.50 for 25's. (Crud - I've just eaten a whole bowl of cornchips while I've been sitting here - they just taste so good!). Someone give me an advert which will stop me eating cornchips ... Hey guys, we have had those ads in New Zealand since (about) the early 90's and our smoking rate has increased - especially in young women. The ads don't prove anything to me - what's the point of showing the aorta of a 30-something smoker if they don't show the aorta of a 30-something non-smoker (and maybe the aorta of a 30-something non-smoker who eats takeaways at every meal). What I mean is - the ads are pointless. We did have a drink/drive ad here which was hugely successful and it said "If you don't drink and drive, you're a bloody good friend". I think stop smoking ads would be far better served to concentrate on encouraging people to give up, letting them know it can be done and giving them the tools to help them in their quits instead of trying to scare the pants of people!! This will only stress smokers out and make them want another smoke ... LOL. Well, it's just my opinion anyway ... any thoughts?

Thanks Melanie, and to Redrosie: Sounds like the exact same anti-smoking ad they show here in NY. We have pretty strict smoking laws in NYC as well. And I have to say, it makes quitting a lot easier. Also we have had steep increases in the tabacco tax, and now our major wants to add another .50 . Just makes it easier to stay quit, because if I was still smoking that would mean dishing out $8.25 for the brand of cigarettes I used to smoke. :gasp: Gaby My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 8 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 169 Amount Saved: $62 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 17 Mins: 56 Seconds: 33

I live in NYC, and the State of New York has launched a Smoke Free program which has been in effect for some time now. Not only do they show very graffic ads on television such as the brain of a 38-year old smoker who did from a stroke, the heart valve of a 32-year old smoker, as well as the destruction of the lungs, they also provide a support hotline for smokers. And those who are eligible receive a free starter kit, as well as phone support. I am really curious if other states provide the same service. I had reached the point where I wanted to quit, and those ads were the last little push I needed. And every time I feel like I want to cave in, I just need to recall these very graphic ads, and let me tell you those cravings disappear faster than lighting up a cigarette. It would be great to hear if your state provides something similar, or not at all. Hi Forthe11thtime. It's funny you should write about that, because last night I saw a very disgusting anti-smoking ad on T.V. It showed the aortic valve of a 35 year old smoker after death. The surgeon was literally able to squeeze this yellow fatty substance out of it. Truly terrifying. I told myself then that I would keep that image close whenever I get cravings. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and we also have very strong anti-smoking programs availiable. Also very strict laws, cannot smoke virtually anywhere. No more huddling outside for me! :)redrosie My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 24 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 587 Amount Saved: $199.2 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 9 Mins: 12 Seconds: 7

Here in the Maritimes we have some of the highest tax rates on cig. in the country. I smoked the "cheap" brand at $8.30 a pack, but other cigs are as much as $9.60. Boy our money saved meter sure will add up quickly won't it? ;)redrosie My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 24 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 587 Amount Saved: $199.2 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 9 Mins: 14 Seconds: 55

I use to see ads like that too BFS. The sad part is that I never paid any attention to them.
