The 2nd Part of My Quit

17 years ago 0 481 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I had very similar feelings when I started my weight loss and excersize. At that time, I could barely do 15 min on a treadmill and I was smoking two packs a day. I could feel chest pains starting but was way too scared to go to a doctor about it. Then, I joined Weight Watchers online and the ymca. I have been so surprized with the progress I made so quickly! It really does not take long nor does it have to be grueling. I started out at the 10 min. of treadmill I could do without dying and worked up. Now I can do the Elliptical for 30 min, (I do like that machine) circuit train for 1 hour and then 30 min. on the treadmill. I remember that I thought that 3 miles per hour and 100 rpm on the elliptical was fast for me when I started. Now I'm able to do half that. I increased very very slowly, so it was never very unpleasant. Now I am here because I figured out that if I can lose all the weight and stuff I can certainly quit smoking. YOU CAN DO IT! And you may even enjoy it! Hi Bingo!!! I know what you mean. I went to a personal trainer as well and I did it as a smoker. LOL ... what a joke, right? Smoking and exercising. They hardly go together. Kinda like taking a shower and getting all pretty and smelling nice ... and then having a smoke and stinking yourself up. Oh the logic. I look back at it now and can't believe myself. Anyway ... I was embarrassed too. I wanted to make excuses not to go. But here is the good part ... I did go and I did what my personal trainer told me to do. I put my all into it and lost 30 pounds in 3 months. After about 6 weeks ... I can't tell you the pride I felt. It made me feel so good about myself. I was doing it! Me! As a smoker even! Crazy! Now if I can do that as a smoker ... imagaine what we can do as NON-SMOKERS!!!! Kudos to you for approaching this like you do your QUIT! It is pretty much the same as a QUIT, now that I look back at it. In the beginning it was hard, then it gets easier, then you start seeing your progress and results, then you are so flippin' happy with your success and how you are feeling. Then that motivates you to go at it even harder. I'm really excited for you Bingo! I can't wait to hear you post in a couple of months. I bet you will be singing a tune of progress & results! Congrats on your choice for a new life! I'm really happy for you! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Well, I am about to start on what I've come to think of as the second part of my quit. The "getting in shape and loosing some weight" part. Holy crap is this going to be hard. Holy crap is this going to suck. Holy crap could this be any more EXACTLY like quitting smoking??!! :p I would not expect any of you to remember, but back when I first joined this site I mentioned that I was quitting smoking for several reasons, not the least of which was health problems. As a quick recap for those of you just joining our broadcast... I'm 36 years old. I started having the health problems of an 80 year old. Swollen feet and legs, chest pains, general weakness, joint pain. I've become a blob. I'd come home from work, sit eat and smoke. All night. That's it. I put on 70 pounds in 5 years. I think if I don't make a change, I will be dead within a few years. Seriously. I just found out I have sleep apnea, and have begun treatment for that. Hopefully, that will at least allow me to soon get a decent nights sleep. Now for the weight and excercise issues. Holy crap is this going to suck. I'm realizing just how much this is an addiction to NOT being well. So I went last night for my first visit with a personal trainer. I will begin a training routine with him 2 times per week for an hour. He wants to start me out very easy, as he understands what a complete slug I have become. I HATE HATE and an embarrased by the fact that I can barely make it 15 minutes walking on a treadmil. That is STUPID. It was pouring down rain in a horrendous thunderstorm last night as I was driving to the appointment. I started thinking 'Man this is crazy. Weather Service is issuing all kinds of warnings. Hey! I could call him and cancel! That's a PERFECTLY valid excuse.' Then I stopped. Wow, how EXACTLY like our smoking thinking is that?!! That really hit home to me. I'm currently addicted to eating horribly, to not excercising. I was running through ALL the same types of thinking that I've had about smoking. Reasons why I shouldn't try. Reasons why it will be hard.. too hard for ME to accomplish. I have to do this. I HAVE TO DO THIS. I have to approach this like quitting smoking. Motivational thinking. Inspiration. Acceptan

Thanks for the responses folks. Why can't this just be all better and everything NOW?!! lol Anyways, I do appreciate it it. I think it was hit right on the head: fear of failure. That and the fact that I just plain like to eat and eat and eat. :) I'll post regular updates on the CRAP I have to go through for this! And also, I can't believe I forgot to post my meter! Thanks again! Holy Cow Mama!! That is AMAZING! I'm sure you know just how hard that is to visualize for me right now. I'm curious, how long have you been at this? By the way - CONGRATS ON THE QUIT! Well done!! You've made it through your first day. That ROCKS! Thanks for the kind words - really. Bingo
Hey Bingo - do you want an virtual excercise buddy?
I'm up for it! I'm currently thinking I'll start this new diet on Sunday. You know, that way I get to put it off another day. :) Plus, I've gotta go shopping to get the stuff for it and I really would like to finish off the open foods I've got here now. I did however go make myself a big frickin jug of Green Tea and stick it in the fridge. We shall see how that comes out. But yeah, I'm up for it. You harrass the hell outta me, and I'll whine and complain to you. Sounds fair, eh? :p Bingo My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 41 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 828 Amount Saved: $123 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 22 Mins: 18 Seconds: 1

Hi Bingo, You're doing the right thing. Any exercise is better than no exercise. Don't be embarassed as to how you can't do much at the moment - that will come with time. I'm sure you'll find that exercise - and getting those endorphines going will ease your quit. Just like your quit - one step at a time! All the best!
