Mardi, As long as you are snacking on healthy foods to get you through this it shouldn't be a problem. Right now you have this hand-mouth habit. It's a tough one to break but you will. Try some other activity to do with your hands to distract you, like knitting. Hope this helps, Melanie ______________________ The SSC Support Team

Hello, the first time I quit ( I know, that's a dumb thing to say, although it did last one year.. .anyhow) smoking I was eating alog. When I say alot, I really mean it. I was putting down, on AVERAGE, 1/2 a cake a day on top of the normal amount of food. I'm talking about chocolate torts, black forest, cheesecake, etc... , not the light ones... hehe. (note to self: buy cake on way home after work). I honestly attribute this, in part, to my "success". However, this time when I quit, I've decided to avoid that attrocious eating. For my last and final quit, I now I snack on almonds, peanuts, cashews, carrots, celery, graham crackers.... on other healthier items. Yesterday, at the grocery store, I bought a bag of chocolate chip cookies, but only had 5 or 6 (okay, maybe 10) when I got home. The point is, you can eat healthier but still allow yourself some indulgence when the nicotene cravings become too severe. I also allow myself to eat crappy on Saturdays and do my best on other days of the week. I also go to the gym at least 3 times a week. Enjoy your food, but know that you can be healthy while still eating that junk food when you "need", or deserve, it. Luci-Lou Would you rather be a little more to HUG or would you rather be like Licking an Ash Tray? Try More SEX !!! It burns calories! The More SEX, The More Food!! LOL Bryan Remember there is not one damn thing in a cigarette you NEED. It is the Nicotine that has you! Luci-Lou- Remember why we're here. You wouldn't bring a six-pack to an AA meeting, would you? [LOL] Right now we're trying to replace the smoking habit with healthier activites. All of the wonderful things you mentioned would be fine if we knew when to quit. One cookie? One small piece of cake? One tiny piece of chocolate? I don't think I have the inner strength yet. In fact, just thinking about it is making my trigger-finger [index finger used to punch candy-machine buttons] twitch. I cant get enough!! Ive gained like 7 lbs+ since I quit smoking!! Instead of thinking about smoking all the time, all I think of is food...I want to snack ALL THE FREAKING TIME!!! If someone told me I had the choice of either eating junk food or smoking, and neither of them would have any affect on my health, Im pretty sure Id chose the food! Ive joined Weight Watchers online earlier this week, and am following the rules properly, but in my mind I am eating chocolate, salt & vinegar chips, popcorn smothered in butter, nachos and cheese, chocolate, fries, chicken fingers....Im horrible! How do I get my mind off the food? Im drinking water, chewing gum, eating healthy snacks between meals, making sure most carbs I consume are complex carbs... Maybe I need to join a food-cessation-group next!!!! Lucy :(

I think my problem is that the day I quit smoking, I told myself that I was allowed to indulge in any and all junk food because it was better than smoking (and because it was close to Christmas!) So essentially, I have replaced smoking with snacking and now that I am trying to quit snacking, I dont know what to DO with myself!! I constantly feel like I should be DOING something (with my hands and mouth anyway exercise is just not my thing!), which (prior to Dec 23 05) used to be go and have a smoke. I'm mostly just here to vent because I want to go to the store and buy junk-food... Grrrrrrrsnarrrrrrrrlgrrrrrrrrr.!!!!!!!! I know exactly how you feel, but we can quit and not eat everything in sight. Try to eat healthy, eat smaller portions, buy low fat foods, low sugar candies, every little bit helps. Get LOTS of exercise, it seems to be the real outlet for all this. We have a great thread going on here (daily diet watch) it really does help to post with others who are suffering as I am sure you know from joining this site. Come and join in with us. Luci-Lou yes indeed it is a struggle not to replace one for the other.....I did GREAT early in my quit when I was still on the patch - but BOY OH BOY off the patch all I did was want to eat and then came the holidays........UGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Since the first of the year I have been dieting and exercising - have lost 6 lbs and found that it certainly doesn't come off as quickly as it goes on!!!! Good luck with Weight Watchers - I believe it's a great diet...hang in there......"this too will pass" - HOPEFULLY!!!!!!
