Wow, what an awesome thing to do! I guess she's left by now but I just came across this and I am so warm & fuzzy right now, (very NOT like me,) I'm tempted to go be nice to someone... The Mayan children looked up to her before; imagine how impressed they will be at her strength & determination to quit smoking! She will seem like a Super-Hero to them. Well, she is a Super-Hero. I am leaving on Monday morning for the mountains of Guatemala. This is a twenty year annual tradition for us to go to this lake village over a mile high. We go laden with 500 tennis balls, hundreds of pairs of shoes, stuffed animals, and swim suits to give away to the mountain children. We come home with the same duffles laden with weavings and folk art to support some of the families we know and to sell to friends to pay for our next year's trip. I spend much of my time with these darling little Mayan children. I always felt guilty about smoking in front of them (but of course I rationalized and did it anyway) They looked up to me, and yet I always felt bad about what kind of example I was setting for them. This year I can be in the airport relaxed without wondering how I could get through the next few hours. This year I don't have to visit any of those awful airport smoking lounges. This year I won't be on the emotional roller coaster always brought about because I always tried (which of course means not succeeding) to cut down and smoke less on vacation. This year our little hospidaje room won't be smoky. This year I can relax after dinner without smoking. This year I won't have to smoke those awful strong cigarettes that this country exports to Central America. This year I can set a good example for the kids. This year I am freeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
