Very tough start with this, twice in the last 21 days smoked. Went cold turkey both times, thinking about going with the patch. Problem is I think it's more the habit of smoking than the addiction. Having trouble doing the everyday things without having one, the withdrawal symptoms weren't as bad as some have posted here, but the mental habit has done me in twice. Would the patch be of help knowing you can't smoke when you wear it? Or is there another way mentally to put it behind you. I know I can deal with the withdrawal symptoms, but this is driving me crazy.

Hi Rusty, Viewing it differently as a addiction as you stated, does make sense and how a the mind can play games to view it as a habit instead of what it really is makes a lot of sense to me. I will go back and re-work the steps and figure it where I went wrong and what needs to be fixed. I want to quit and get over this addiction for my wife and kids, and to see my grandkids, not just see them, but be able to do things with them. I will beat this.

Rekud, I used the patch and really liked it. Even though you will still have craves while using the patch, (which will be okay for you since you said you can handle the craves) it really helped me get over the habit part of smoking. I had a jump on the habit part a little bit anyway as I stopped smoking in my car 2 years ago, and stopped smoking in my house 8 years ago. I would smoke in my garage so I was still able to smoke a pack a day. I can say that I don't have any habit triggers anymore only craves sometimes as I am still on the patch but almost done with it. I would try it since you have tried cold turkey twice already. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Good Luck. I found that wearing the patch somehow made it more real for me. That there was no fooling around, I absolutely knew I could NOT smoke while wearing it (I have high blood pressure to begin with - smoking while wearing the patch would be like shaking a can of soda -watch me pop a gasket!!!) And, don't think you can take the patch off and sneak one.........the nicotene stays in your system for up to 2 hrs after ripping it off....so by the time you "can" sneak one, you are past the crave anyway. I say "whatever works". Good luck!! You can make it Just take your Stand. Don't let that sneaky little devil convince you that you need a cig, because hard as it is there are many of us here to prove that you can get past this one breath at a time. Keep on Keeping on. Sounds like you really want this and thats allot of the battle. You need to want this with every fiber of your being. Rusty gave you some great advice and she has helped me through some rough spots. Also, read and post here all you can, it helps to read how others have done it. We all have different ideas of how, but we all want the same end result. Hi rekud, you are absolutely right that the mind will play games with you. Actually, it's the addiction doing that. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference, but the junkie part makes you think you can't do it, makes you come up with excuses, makes you think you can smoke just one, makes you think it's not the right time, and on and on. Anything that is holding you back from quitting is the addiction chattering away in your head. There is no glory in playing the hero here. Just plow through and don't let anything get in your way. You can do it. I am living proof! Hi rekud, have you worked the program tools over on the left? I think you will learn a lot about yourself if you work them, and this will help answer many of your questions. Don't fool yourself (as everyone does at first) of thinking of this as "habit" as opposed to "addiction", or trying to split one part as habit and another part as addiction. It is all addiction. You are an addict. There's no playing around with it. It isn't semantics. It's truth. What you call "the mental habit" is just junkie language for "hooked." Once you realize that, everything will make more sense. You have to go through it all, the mental, the physical, the emotional. And most of all...you have to STOP smoking. There's no other way.
