Butterfly, Very interesting stats. It's neat how each generation evolves. When the baby boomers were growing up the emphasis on the harmful effects of smoking was simply not there. Very little people were informed of the toxins. Now with todays society and the advancement we've seen in the health care industry, along with the media. We as a society are constantly reminded of the effects of smoking a second hand smoke. 10-20 years ago, you would never see a commercial on TV educating us on smoking prevention. Instead there were cigarette ads in newspapers and magazines. It's interesting to see how society has changed. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories with us. (Died of heart attack at 65) All my aunts in uncles on both sides (except one) smoked .. 13/14 All my brothers and sister smoke/smoked 5/5 My 3 boys do not smoke and hate smoke. My oldest daughter started smoking after getting married. My youngest daughter was smoking in high school but, quit just before going off to college. Yep.. interesting !! This is so interesting... Both my parents smoked. My dad had a severe heart attack at 52, quit smoking but picked up chewing tobacco. He died at 68 of residual damage to a heart valve that lead to congestive heart failure. My mom continued to smoke until the age of 68 or so, and quit for 5 years, started back again, and within 3 years had lung cancer. Died at 79. Two brothers and sister, and we all smoked. Oldest brother now has emphysema (55 years old), second oldest is well on his way. My sister and I have quit for prolonged periods of time over the years, but always pick it back up, saying "only as a social thing" - wrong! I am glad to say that all four of us have quit now, due to the diagnosis of emphysema for my oldest brother. I am concerned that the brothers are going to have trouble staying quit, even with diseases looming in their future. They are both on the patch right now. My sister and I will do what we can to help - we are determined to stay off nicotine forever!! My dad smoked, and so did my grandfather who lived with us;he smoked cigars. My mom, now get this, didn't start smoking until she was in her forties. My brother and I both started smoking when we were teenagers. My brother still smokes, and as far as I know, has never made an attempt to quit. Come to think of it, we were surrounded by smokers when we were kids: aunts, uncles, family friends, older cousins. Wow, that's sad! I have two families: My adopted family: Mom started smoking in her late teens and never smoked heavily, quit when she was 40 (35 yrs. ago). She has no smoking related health problems. Dad smoked and died of stomach cancer at age 60. My oldest daughter, 20, smokes lightly (<5/day) and is trying to quit. None of my other children smoke. My birth family: Mother smoked from early teens to 51 (quit 3 yrs.). She was diagnosed with emphysema at 48. Over half of her 15 siblings smoke and many have smoking related health problems - several have died and one recently lost a leg. Both of my grandparents died of lung disease. All of my half-siblings smoke. I don't know if it makes any difference, but the family has lived in Virginia (tobacco country) since the 1600's. Social norm? That's my family! gpw My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 28 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 429 Amount Saved: $112 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 15 Mins: 39 Seconds: 36

Butterfly, I think my brothers biggest reason is his religion and the fact that it really does stink he is now 35. My husband smokes still and our 2 oldest kids smoke the other 3 don't just because they don't like the smell my youngest tried and it made him sick (he is 18). I am hoping to inspire my mom and my brother to quit my husband thinks I am on a crusade to save the world (he is a lost cause lol) I would just like my mom to give herself a little longer life purely selfish on my part. My father smoked before I was born, and started smoking occasionally a few years ago. My mother has never smoked. Among aunts, uncles, cousins very, very few smoke. All of my brothers and sisters smoke (5 of us). Quitting attempts have been frequent lately.
