Cigarettes Not Smoked

Both of my parents smoked. My sister and I both smoked. We all quit and are still quit except for dad. (He relapsed last November) I think Melanie makes a good point. Besides the lack of education, smoking used to be the 'cool thing' to do. (Now it seems to me 'the tattoo' is the 'in' thing) ~all the best N2k My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 174 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,847 Amount Saved: $870 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 14 Mins: 19 Seconds: 56

My great grandparents, my grandparents and my parents smoked. There are four of us and I am the only one who doesn't smoke anymore. No one else in my family is even considering quitting smoking. I have 3 children and they all hate smoking. I hope they always continue to hate it. Both of my parents smoked and both died at an early age. My dad had a heart attack at age 57 and my mom died of lung cancer at 59. What a fool i have been. My children ages...20 20 22 25 remember the grief I went through with my mom and they have watched me struggle in my attempts to quit. NONE of them have ever smoked and they are repulsed by the idea. Not sure why, but I am so very thankful. Well this certainly is interesting.... I've tallied the responses so far and 13 of us reported having parents who smoked, while 5 reported having parents who did not smoke. Here's the positive part though... of the people who reported that they have kids, 5 reported having no kids who smoke, while only 1 reported having a child who smokes. So, even though a lot of us came from families of smokers, it seems that we are succeeding, at least a little bit, in getting our kids not to smoke. Missyfit, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it comes down to actively teaching our children not to smoke. After you said that, I thought about my situation, and while my parents didn't smoke, I don't remember them ever talking to me about the dangers of it... I think they just thought that they were leading by example. And until I started smoking, I HATED smoke! But that all changed when I started doing it myself, of course. So I think you might have a point that teaching our children not to AND leading by example is important. This is a GREAT thread! Keep it coming! I'm really interested to see who else has any statistics or any theories or ideas on this topic! Crave the Quit! Same question to you, Arwensmom... what do you think you did to keep your son from smoking? Or do you think your influences had anything to do with his choice? I'm curious. I think this could be a really good discussion. Crave the Quit! I'm curious because it seems that kids of smokers smoke. Neither of my parents have ever smoked (that I'm aware of) and I started smoking out of rebellion. But I know that lots of kids of smokers start smoking later in life, even though at one point, they might have asked their parents to quit. So if you have grown children who do NOT smoke, what do you think the difference was? What did you do to try to keep them from smoking and do you think it made a difference in their decision to not smoke? And, how many of you have kids who smoke or smoked but quit? And/or how many of you come from families where one or both of your parents smoke? And if you don't come from a family of smokers, what was it that made you start smoking? I think it'd be interesting to see how many of us come from smoking families, versus non-smoking families. And it might also be helpful if you have grown children who don't smoke, what advice would you give to others with kids to get them to not start... since smoking in families is so common. Polly, That's interesting that your youngest brother is repulsed by smoking? How old is he? What do you think made him decide not to smoke? Crave the Quit! This will be an interesting thread. :) Both my parents smoked. They forbade my smoking; lot of good that did. I am 26, and both my parents smoke. My dad quit when I was about 13 or so, and then he started again a few years ago. My mom hass smoked since she was in her early teens. I started smoking when I was about 14. My sister (age 24) does not smoke. She has smoked before when she drinks a lot out with the girls, but that's the extent of it. She never seems to "need" a cigarette. My brother (age 17) smokes....but he doesn't smoke cigarettes....
