Some Facts I found

18 years ago 0 101 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hello Fellow Quitters (which in this context is a very positive spin indeed), I found some facts on another site which I wanted to share with you. Forgive me if someone has already posted these in the past, but since I am new I just thought I go ahead and post them anyway. -Every year, tobacco-related disease kills over 178,000 women. -Every year, cigarettes leave about 12,000 kids motherless. -Every year, cigarettes leave about 31,000 kids fatherless. -Tobacco kills more Americans than auto accidents, homicide, AIDS, drugs and fires combined. -By the year 2020, tobacco is projected to kill about 10 million people a year worldwide. -There are 8.5 million people sick with diseases caused by smoking. Gosh, these are some really staggering numbers. I knew it was bad, but to actually see it in black-and-white made it even more real and frightning. I can't express enough how glad I am to have found this website. I check in a few times a day, and to read your messages of encouragement (as well as the despair we all go through at times), gives me the strength to hang in there. Just knowing that we all are in the same boat and have the common goal to beat this potentially deadly habit is empowering. Gads - amazing how addiction and denial go hand in hand. I am sure that I could have found this info before, but I would have immediately "changed the channel." Thanx. Good post Gaby now let us expand our on our information. I can not stand by and watch the world go up in smoke, so I am in the process of starting a program of trying to reach our children by presenting facts to them by way of non smoking seminars and goup discussions at the community and school level. Also I am involved in a mentoring program to reach senior citizen smokers. How's that :) I'll catch em coming and going. Here are some killer stats that might even surprise you even seing info on another site. ? Since 2000 - 6,633,124 kids have become regular smokers. ? 2,211,041 kids will die prematurely. ? The tobacco industry spends over 15.1 BILLION a year in marketing their product in the USA alone, most of it reaching kids. ? 43,000 children are orphaned each year because of smoking related deaths. ? Tobacco KILLS an average of 10 persons every minute thats over 5,000.000 a year. ? If youre married to a smoker you have nearly a 30% risk of developing lung cancer. ? More Americans die from cigarette related illnesses than Car Accidents, AIDS, alcohol, suicide, homicide and illegal drugs combined. ? It will cost employers on average over 9,000 per year for each employee that smokes. That includes lost time for Cig breaks, cost of health insurance, and lost time due to flu and colds. I could list another 10 pages of interesting stats on tobacco and it's cause and effects but I won't as you can on your own find more doom and gloom out there on the dangers of smoking. On a positive note over 45,000,000 people have quit smoking in the past decade. Duffis duffis's Quit Stats Since Sunday, February 13, 2005, I've been smoke-free for: 344 Days, 16 Hours, 2 Minutes, 27 Seconds. I have saved $1,444.80 by not smoking 10340 cigarettes. By not smoking I have added 74 Days, 16 Hours, 1 Minutes, 20 seconds. to my life expectancy.

Hi Gabby, Scary isnt it? As smokers, I believe we hid from the facts. The less we knew, the easier it was to keep on smoking. As quitters, at least were giving ourselves a fighting chance. Not cravin', never cavin'.
