A friend of mine recently went on vacation. I was aware that she was going, but not where she went.
She told me yesterday that she won a free, all expenses paid, plus $1500 in cash, trip to the Marlboro Ranch (For those that don't know, Marlboro is a brand of cigarette made by Philip Morris).
When they got there, they were given 2 cartons of smokes each, and they could go to the ciggie counter and get packs whenever they wanted them. There were all kinds of outdoor activities - skiing, snow mobiling (sp?), tubing, and all kinds of other things. They were given all kinds of clothes, boots, purses, and wallets, etc for free. Plus I guess the company shipped them a whole box of stuff before they even left for vacation.
She said that you were encouraged to smoke during all of the activities. Well, maybe not encouraged, but it was perfectly acceptable to smoke.
How sick is all of this? I mean... now the cigratte companies are giving away free trips to smokers because they smoke? I get a sinking feeling in my stomach when I think about this ranch. All of the people that go there are probably going to be lifelong smokers. They have associated smoking with something absolutely wonderful in their lives. They must feel like their tobacco company loves them, and would do anything for them.
I wonder if the tobacco company is going to pay my friends smoking related medical bills when she gets sick... of course not, because she'll have to quit and she won't be of any use to them anymore.
I just have to wonder what kind of company could come up with this idea...
