Question?

I Quit, I am with ya. Sometimes I dislike the smell, other times I wish I could bottle that second hand smoke. Like butterfly, I find that the times I enjoy the smell...it's because I think about 'the good times' I had with my cancer sticks. I think about the smoke with morning coffee, and oh that one after dinner. I'm learning to get past these thoughts though and see it all for what it really was...a horrible, nasty, life-threatening addiction! I think about all those mornings I'd wake up after a night out smoking one right after the other...lungs hurting and hacking all day long. Ever cough up some of that gray junk? Nice huh? It's all about getting over this addiction we have and seeing it for what it really is. How many people that never smoked a day in their life do you think smell cigarette smoke and it evokes happy thoughts? None! The addiction never got a hold of them! Try to start envisioning yourself as a non-smoker and viewing cigarettes through those eyes. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Will I really get to the point where I cant stand the smell of smoke? I am amazed at my 15 days now and was wondering if smoking will disgust me like all the reformed smokers I have known in the past and resented for their nasty little comments. Will I become one? because I feel as though I am not going to be successful as a "Real Non Smoker" until I do. This isnt exactly coming out right. Let me try again. Today was not as hard as yesterday although I was very aware of the smokers at the mall entrances etc and I still tried to wonder how I could have one without cheating. This haunts me and I want to hate it, I want to be disgusted with it, but I just cant seem to do it. You guys who are long term quitters, about how long does it take for you to get grossed out with the smells. I Quit, So I guess the answer to your question is yes, you will get to the point of hating the smell of ciggie butts. At the beginning of my quit, I too liked to smell them. I think it was because I was still in denial about my quit. When I came to terms with the fact that I was never going to be able to have what I so enjoyed for so many years and personally confirmed my quit- then they began to stink. Sometimes we say and do things that we are not 100% that its permanent. Its just a matter of time once you make up your mind that they are not for you anymore that the stale smell will come. I've gotten to the point where I can't stand the smell anymore. It really makes my stomach turn. I can't believe that for years we didn't know we smelled so bad. My father smokes and I'm like Ladybugg....I want him to move out because I can't stand it when he walks by me. In the beginning of my quit the smell made me crave desperately. It has just been of late that even the thought of how he smells makes me ill. I too am trying not to be one of THOSE ex-smokers.
I feel as though I am not going to be successful as a "Real Non Smoker" until I do.
I Quit, As long as you don't smoke, then you are a successful non-smoker. Even if you NEVER hate the smell of smoke, you are STILL a successful non-smoker as long as you don't smoke. That's all it takes! Congratulations on being a successful non-smoker! Crave the Quit! I Quit, I know how you feel. I used to feel the same way and I wondered if I'd EVER begin to hate it. This is what Shevie asked me on 8/29/05 and here's my response: Shevie: Do you really dislike smoking, or are you just going with the current flow of popular sentiment? Me: Yes, I LIKE to smoke. And I am trying VERY hard to hate it, but I can't. The smell of a freshly lit cigarette... ahhhhhhhh! And the worst part is that when a craving or smoking thought comes by, I relish in it, and think about all of the good times that I had smoking and about how nice it would be to relax with a cigarette with friends again. Now, I have been trying REALLY hard to quit doing that because I KNOW that's the WORST thing I can do, and I've been getting better with it, but I still do it. Do I still feel this way? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! When I walk by smokers, I have to hold my breath! I don't casually stroll by and take my time, I run like hell because I don't want to gag. I don't even like the thought of smoking now... I mean really, I don't. It's almost as if I don't even understand why I liked it to begin with. I mean, I understand I liked it because I was and still am an addict and can't have another puff ever, but I don't see the draw anymore... it's just a disgusting addiction. When did this happen? I'm not sure, but I definitely changed from LOVING the smell of smoke and the thought of smoking myself to being absolutely disgusted by it. So yes, it's possible for you to change and get to a point where you don't like the smell, but I don't know when or if that will happen for you. Crave the Quit! I can relate to all of this. I am trying so hard not to be one of "those" people (holier than thou ex smoker). I do feel sorry for people who still smoke and I wish I could help them all quit smoking. The smell of fresh smoke doesn't bother me much but the smell of stale smoke when someone comes in the store where I work is enough to gag me sometimes. I feel so bad thinking I must of smelled like that. I love being quit but I wish I could hate the thought of smoking.
and I only 'thought' I loved to smoke...what I loved was being able to shut up that junky inside me!!
Katy, good line and I sure hope I feel that way real soon!!! I quit, I want my brother to move out, partly because I can't stand the smell of him when he walks by after going outside for his fix. That said...I don't think I'll ever be one of those ex-smokers. The main emotion I feel for a smoker is pity. I remember too well the need, the denials, the need, the control, the need, etc. I pray they find it within themselves to quit too. Keep it going... I agree with all these comments....and it's highly unlikely that you are going to continue to 'enjoy' the smell of the smoke......fresh smoke will hold an allure longer than the stink of stale smoke. I could smell that stale smoke in a week or so of quitting and thought it was awful. I about ran myself ragged trying to purge it from my car cause that was where it was the worst. Our home was nasty also....and it took a lot of cleaning, painting, etc. to rid it of that smell. Boy were we stupid.....for years we were stupid. LOL and I only 'thought' I loved to smoke...what I loved was being able to shut up that junky inside me!! When I finally got over it all I loved being quit! katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1468 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 58,732 Amount Saved: $8074 Life Gained: Days: 191 Hrs: 12 Mins: 26 Seconds: 51
