Day 3 and struggling a little

18 years ago 0 2 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thanks for all your responses. Your support is proving very helpful. I had a long hot bath and an early night. Why do I need so much sleep? Is it just that it's the safest place to be as I can't smoke there? Or is this a genuine withdrawal symptom? My sister quit yesterday, also using the NRT patch. We will be able to support each other and get through it together. I am finding that cold water helps. Also ice cold grapes. Just keeping my mind occupied seems to be what I need. Actually looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow. Not as much opportunity to smoke or think about smoking. Hi to all. I stopped smoking on Thursday using NRT patches and found the first couple of days quite easy. Today is a major struggle, probably because I'm not working. It's difficult to keep distracted. I have made sure that I have no cigarettes anywhere in the house and have very little cash either. I hope that this strategy will leave me with no opportunity to be tempted. Just trying to keep busy! And to plan what I will do with all the spare money I intend to stockpile. Annie Keep going - I have kept a diary this time to see how bad the bad days are - day three was difficult for me too. I can only repeat what everyone else is saying - it WILL get easier. Don't let yourself have one puff - in my experience, it takes a couple of years to try to quit again if you don't make it. Make this the last time you ever have to go through hell week - I am in heck week and it is not nearly so bad! Hi Annie- Welcome. I agree with the others that the first few days aren't as bad as what is to follow. The weekends are very rough because of the freedom to do with your time what you will. I am beginning to dread the weekends :( Just find lots of ways of coping. I practice smoking with straws, lol and taken breaths in and out almost like I was dragging on a cigarette :gasp: :8o: If all else fails, either walk briskly or take a nap. Be prepared for it to get worse before it gets better. It does really get better after "hell week" I wish you lots of luck Annie, we are all here for you :) Denisey My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 295 Amount Saved: $70 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 7 Mins: 58 Seconds: 35

Annie, I also found that the first couple days weren't as bad as some of the ones to follow. The good news is that if you're in day 3, then you're almost halfway done with hell week! Quitting isn't easy, but it is SOOOOOO worth it! Hang in there. Congratulations on 3 days! Crave the Quit! Annie, Congratulations on your decision to quit and welcome to the SSC. I quit by using the patch. The whole point of the patch is to make the transition to being an ex-smoker as easy as possible by reducing the cravings. The patch feeds you a measured dose of nicotine to keep your addiction on the happy side. Smokers are simply nicotine addicts. Never forget that. The patch does not replace a persons Strength, Determination, Commitment and Positive Attitude. You stll need all of those things to effectively quit. Quitting smoking is more than just not smoking anymore. It's about a lifestye change and changing the way you cope with life. You will no longer have your cancer crutches to help you along with decisions. You will be living life just like a never smoker does.. by dealing with life head on. They don't call the first week of a quit "Hell Week" for nothing. Your body wants you to smoke, yet your mind knows you shouldn't. The difference between someone who doesn't stay quit verus someone who does stay quit is as simple as ones personal commitment to their quit. A quit gets much better and much easier as time passes. Don't forget you spent years as a smoker.. it will take more than a few weeks to relearn how to deal with life as an ex-smoker. Give yourself that chance. Be patient. Read and learn about the quit process. Have some healthy snacks on hand. Exercise a bit. I chewed on straws early on and sipped on ice water. Just hang in there. It does get better. Best wishes. Welcome Annie! The third day oftentimes is one of the hardest. Keep your coping tools handy... sipping ice water helps a bunch! Reading and posting on this site is one of the best things I did for my quit. Stay close here especially during the first weeks! We CAN do this! Being tired is a real symptom.....be good to yourself during this time.....plenty of rest, regular meals, healthy snacks, exercise, little rewards and pampering each day. Use your patches faithfully and as directed....they will help to take the edge off the cravings. I used them and credit them with allowing me to wean off nicotine while I developed coping skills to use when I finally purged my system of it completely. The freedom is wonderful....don't ever doubt it! hang tough and remain in control Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1486 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 59,460 Amount Saved: $8173 Life Gained: Days: 193 Hrs: 21 Mins: 31 Seconds: 3
