You won?t get fat when stop smoking, if you don?t overeat.

Another frequently-repeated rationalization for the cigarette habit is: "I'd like to stop smoking, but every time I do I gain weight. And it's worse to be overweight than it is to smoke." It isn't the fact that a person has stopped smoking that may cause him to gain weight. It's the fact that he substitutes the habit of overeating for the habit of smoking. The good news is, not all smokers who stop smoking gain weight. Even if weight gain was inevitable, the average gain is only between 6 and 8 pounds. Not too much of a big deal now, isn't it? In the belief that he needs something tangible to relax tension (which he previously achieved by the mechanical movements of lighting a cigarette) a "reformed addict" may take to eating candy bars or nibbling on sweets . . . something to do, anything to do, in other words, to take his mind away from the pressing problems, and to get back some of those old, familiar gestures that are part of the habitual pattern of smoking. The gesture of reaching for something, and picking it up, and then placing it in the mouth. The gestures and muscle movements of the lips, mouth and jaws: as many of the gestures of smoking as can be achieved, in other words, without a cigarette. You'll soon see that this isn't necessary either. Do moderate intensity exercises on a regular routine. Examples are to go swimming, jogging, playing a sport or aerobics. Cut down on unhealthy snacking. If you feel like munching, grab something healthy like a diet bar or a fruit. Avoid alcohol or limit yourself to 1 drink a week. Alcohol can make you fat at the wrong places.

Chicken, I totally agree with everything you said and don't think you came off as a b*tch at all just stating your opinion to which we are all entitled. I am sorry to hear you are having a bad day. Is there something in the air?? I am not in the greatest moods today either. It will get better though. Congratulations on 47 days. THAT'S A HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!!!!! Good morning ibanez :) I'm sorry, I do have to agree with Chicken. There are many kinds of people out there. Those of us with addictive personalities, with ultimately lose one addiction for another. And top that off with just one who gains weight easily, and there you go. I hate it when people say they don't want to quit because they will gain weight. It's just a stupid excuse to say they don't want to quit. Or a jealousy response to one who has quit. It all boils down to how your own metabolizism works. Those who have a good one, can eat those candy bars and quit, and not gain a pound. Not me though. I take it one addiction at a time. Handling both long term addictions (smoking & food) will only lead to one failing. I guess I'm not a multi-tasker!!!!!!! Hello, Went to the Dr. today and he told me I was amazing. I had not only quit cigs but also lost a couple of pounds. I am overweight. I need to lose alot more. But, I also know that you will always do cross addiction. I have decided that I am not going to let it be food. I have only quit for a short time but I think that I will lose weight next. I try to eat sugar free jello and lots of fruit. Good luck to all. Well it's a nice theroy but I knew I would gain weight.....there are some women who have a child and walk out of the hospital in the jeans they wore in 3rd grade then someone like me has a kid and battles that extra weight for a very long time!!! I think some people just gain weight easier then others and I know I am now one of those people. Yes I may have taken to a bit of munchin but I gurantee others have too therefore some people gain, some don't. It isn't always possible to get the exercise that you need no matter how you may try to fit it in....somtimes I plan to do my exercise in the 25th or 26th hour of the day.....hmmmm...aint there! I am sorry if I came off as a b*tch and I think I may have....I am right now having one of the worst frickin days I have had in a while and those are few and far between for me....usually in a good mood. But though I am having a bad day, smoking a cigarette is not an option!! It has nothing to do with my bad mood nor do I crave one being in this bad mood. Even though quitting smoking is as simple not smoking another cigarette, when you are struggling with that you don't want someone to tell you "Well, don't smoke one!!!" Well losing weight or not gaining isnt necessarily easy either. I to knew I would gain some weight, but my god I am growing faster than the oil prices per barrel. 26 lbs since my quit date. To curb a craving, I actually bought and ate a loaf of Munich Rye bread. I think I have been slowing down on the food intake, but I look down, and that huge belly I lost just a little while ago is back, with a vengence. I have been getting out more now that the weather is getting better. Hopefully, it will work. My son is turning 3 and he got a bike from Grandpa this past Christmas and I was convinced he wouldnt be able to ride until his 4th birthday. He now is going so fast on it that I had to dust off the wife's bike and ride with him...hmm maybe we are starting something here. Fun, healthy good fun with my son. Gee, what a concept. ibanez, I agree. I have struggled w/my weight since I graduated from High School over 10 years ago. Interestingly that's around the time I started smoking! I don't have any children and I'm not even close to menopause(I hope!)...but, since I've quit, I've lost about 8 or 9 lbs. I know that I struggle w/my weight because I LOVE eating all the "bad" foods and I HATE excercise. But, since I quit smoking, I almost crave excercise! Its really cool! I have also been trying to stick to a sensible diet program, but I have been far from perfect. Also, I feel that quitting smoking has helped me lose a little weight because I feel that if I can quit smoking, I can basically do anything! In my experience, I really believe that your quit dosn't mean you have to gain, because in reality, if you're not putting into your body what you're not using up, you shouldn't gain. But I do have to keep in mind that everyone is different and everyone has different struggles. Some days this weight gain site is really good and some days I hate it..but at the end of the day everyone does have great feedback and it is true that what works for one may not work for the other.. I am going for surgery on May 18th and then after that watch out...I am going to make a very concentrated effort to get some major life changes and an exercise program going... although I don't believe that I suddenly got lazy and didn't care about my weight and whatever the reasons are for the gain....IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX IT....hopefully by the end of the summer I will be where I want to be...Cheers to everyone.... yes it is a MENO POT...

Ibanza - interesting post and the responses. For the 43 years of my smoking life, I never gained weight. I had 4 children and lost my weight within 60 days . ....I used to be one of those who was sort of 'smug' in that I never needed to worry about weight and I secretly thought those that should worry about it..just were either eating too much or not working to lose it...well,, guess what,,,it is time to pay the piper.... I have gained weight....it could be my age..it could be that I am in menopause, it could be that my metabolism really slowed down...did I eat more, not enough to count for my weight gain...but I would think that your statement is judgemental....and some day you may need to pay the piper yourself, so lay off of us tht talk about gaining weight and think that you have the answers...we all feel bad enough gaining weight and alot of people on this sight help us to go in the right direction and give us encouragement to continue to quit and be conscious of the weight at the same time....thanks to Rusty and Galeh and the gang that continue to share ideas and encourage us, their love and patience will pay off for all of us..
