I just started a thread called "fear", but I should have looked here first. I agree..."slipping"?! Where did that sweet little term for "it" come from. I'm scared to death of screwing up my quit after 25 days. To read of someone's slip after a year is so demoralizing. Sure, I realize it happens. I think all of us are pained by it, knowing full well what it means. A little tough love IS being supportive. Thanks to all of you! When I think about slipping, I do think it's a coddling word. In my mind it's to remove some of the fear that people who've smoked one cigarette have about returning to the site and to their quit- I know that if I smoked now a big part of me would feel doomed to failure. Using kinder language might make it easier for people who have quit and smoked to try again. I think it's very important that people feel like they can get back on the wagon! HOWEVER, I started relating that to other things. The language we use in our every day lives is very important. What if we referred to other destructive things in cute, responsibility-free ways? "I slipped" when referring to robbery or violent crime. The terminology we use can desensitize us from our actions and make things that wouldn't be ok, OK. If I think of smoking as "slipping" for long enough, it becomes less and less repugnant, especially to an addict like me. Enough so that I'll smoke? No way, but maybe for someone else. I'm not judging anyone, or trying to offend anyone, but I have been thinking about it a lot and am a little torn- which point of view keeps the most people not smoking? More importantly (maybe??) which keeps ME not smoking? Just a few thoughts... I am really, really surprised, shocked, stumbling around looking to understand. WHAT IS SLIPPING? To me slipping is smoking. Plan and simple if I buy, beg, borrow or steal a cigarette, light it, drag the smoke into my lungs. I am smoking. I am smoking ... I have two choices, continue to smoke or quit smoking. I only hope that if I slip I can get back on the quit and move on. I also hope that in getting back on I will have learned something and that out of the learning I can do different and get on with living the life I want to live. To me hearing someone say that they have "slipped" is like they are in denial. Please come here post, read, talk to someone in your world about how close you are to smoking. Have an emergency plan worked out for going in the opposite direction of the next smoke, the next puff. please please do what you can and DO NOT SMOKE. And if you do smoke please be truthful, be couragous and tell the truth. This community is built on the trust that becomes manifest when people tell th truth about their addiction and the truth about their lives. Riverdale Man... I thought you lived in Canada or somewhere like that. Surely you know that Slipping is something you do on ice. There is not slipping in quitting. When you quit you don't smoke, when you smoke, you are not quit. It is the great debate of the SSC. Phillip, AMEN! I completely agree with you. I too hate the term "slip" although I have, on occasion, been known to use it because that seems to be the accepted term for it. However, when referencing my own screw ups, I call them what they are. I think that taking responsibility for our actions is very important and calling it a "slip" isn't really taking responsibility... it's calling it an accident. Great post! Crave the Quit! Phillip, I agree with you that there really isn't any such thing as a slip. It's just a stupid word. To me, it means "OOPS, I woke up from a faint and there was a cigarette in my mouth!" It would be interesting to know where the word came from. [quote] This community is built on the trust that becomes manifest when people tell th truth about their addiction and the truth about their lives.
