Forthe11thtime, Wow, I'm shocked that these people have the okay to smoke on school property. This is something that is definitely worth bringing up at a PTA meeting or in a discussion with the principle/school board. Please keep us posted on this. I'd really like to know the outcome. Gaby, I think your first card to be played is that of a parent. Express your concerns to the office personell right away. And yes, after doing what is best for the kids, you can point your finger, especially now that you know what it's like on both sides of the fence. Maybe you don't have to be extremely evangelistic with them, but believe in your quit and the reasons you quit. Give those aide's some advice and point them in the direction of this site. Who knows, it would be a great deed done if your efforts nudge just one of them in the right direction toward a successful quit. Good luck with this one! Thank you all so much for your input. Yes, I have to say something about this, and I will. It just is too serious of an issue. Will keep you all posted how it went, Gaby

The school aids at my sons' elementary school are "allowed" to smoke right outside the lobby. On Thursday I could smell the smoke not only coming from their "designated" smoking area, but the smoke had also traveled into the lobby and hallways of the school. Given the strict anti-smoking laws here in NYC I did some research, and found out that they aren't even allowed to smoke on school grounds even if it is outside. I am upset about this because I don't think that they are setting a good example, but what is even worse they are exposing the kids to second hand smoke. And it is against the law. Do I have the right to do something about this as a person who used to be a smoker? Or is it my duty as a now ex-smoker to educate people about the dangers of smoking? I really don't want to turn into one of those finger pointing ex-smokers though I think I am on the fast track to become one. The other day I passed some smokers on the street, I had to walk thru the cloud of smoke and started coughing on purpose, and waved my hand to fan away the smoke, shaking my head all the while. Isn't this horrible? :quest: Let me know what you all think about this, thanks, Gaby My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 32 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 649 Amount Saved: $248 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 20 Mins: 42 Seconds: 13

GAby, You do have the right to do something. Wheather you do it or not is up to you. If it were me, I would probably go to the school administrators and express my concersns about the smokers smoking so close to school. I know out here in California, you cannot smoke anywhere on the school campus legally. You would have to be on the public sidewalk or something. You will have to think long and hard about this though. I remember how I always hated anti smoking Nazi's. And we reformed smokers can be the worst. Just Say N.O.P.E. Interesting question ForThe11thTime. I am quite surprised that smoking is allowed or (tolerated) outside the lobby, in full few of people. I know when I smoked at various jobs, we always seemed to be relegated to the farthest reaches of society.lol. I find that smoking rules and laws are inforced according to whether the inforcer is a smoker or not. Maybe that is the case here. I agree with the others who said you should mention it to the Principal. As a former smoker, and a newly non-smoker, I still think others deserve to walk through clean air. You do whatever you feel comfortable with. Forthe11thtime, Not only SHOULD you say something, you MUST say something! They are putting your child, and all of the other children's LIVES in danger!!! Second hand smoke kills!!! And children are even more susceptible to it because they are so young and their bodies are still growing! They NEED for you to say something! And don't wait - do it now! The sooner, the better. The fact that you are an ex-smoker is completely irrelivent. They are breaking the law! I'm surprised more parents haven't found out about this yet and raised a fuss about it. But I bet that's just a matter of time. I say do something as soon as possible... your child's health is at stake here! Crave the Quit! Gaby, I think you should just mention to the office people that this is happening and that you are concerned for the kid's health as well as the school getting in trouble for breaking the law. I don't think that makes you one of those finger-pointers.
