just started my quit

18 years ago 0 1 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone I'm so pleased to find this forum. i'm only about just over an hour into my quit, i've had many trial runs but this time around i'm hoping this will be the one. I already feel some discomfort but at the same time feel excited about the prospect of finally freeing myself of my terrible smoking habit. Last year was a bad year for me caused by smoking, first a very good friend of mine died at the age of 50 of a smoking relating illness. Plus i noticed myself becoming iller and iller because of my smoking, i lost my voice for nearly a month in September and I was coughing so violently that i would go into mini fits nearly losing consciouness. Hopefully all that will be behind me soon. Looking forward to getting to know all you fellow ex smokers out there. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/28/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: 0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Hey Dynamic ! Welcome to you ! I am so sorry about your friend.. so young.. too young !! I am 46.. OMG. I know what you mean about the smokes and how they start making you fell sicker and sicker. Just the inability to breath normally and not being able to read out loud well.. is enough to make you feel sick. Great decision.. get your aids ready.. whatever you do to handle the cravings.. hard candy, gum, sunflower seeds, etc. Get rid of all the smoking stuff you own.. ALL OF IT !!! Be positive and start smelling your hands and hair daily.. they are no longer tainted in smoke.. you're gettin' clean !! Your coughing is probably from the overproduction of mucus that your body produces when you smoke (to protect you from the smoke actually). The coughing may get better or it may remain the same. When a person quits smoking they often start coughing to get rid of built up crap in their lungs. Some do some don't. Personally my coughing went away immediately after quitting. Then a few days later returned while I coughed up black crud. 2 days worth. My cough comes and goes now.. but, I know it is not from smoking but most likely from my ability to cough up residue from my many years of smoking. BTW Are you going cold turkey or using a gum or anything ? Remember cravings only last for 3 minutes maximum.. they will go away soon. So, welcome dynamic ! Welcome to the SSC and to our little quit family. This is the greatest place on earth to quit smoking and full of the most caring people I have ever met in my life. Quitting isn't easy but it is worth every bit of struggle to break free of the addiction. Learn all you can about the addiction. Have a look around and you will find that no matter what you are going through you are not alone. Be sure to take lots of deep breaths and drink lots of water. It helps to get through the difficult craves. You can do it! Just remember N.O.P.E. Not one puff ever! As long as you follow that you will be just fine. Welcome! You will be amazed at the changes that are coming your way. Things will smell so sweet and taste so good, just in a couple of days! Your heart rate will go down. You will be able to breathe easier. So much happens so quickly if you just give the quit a chance to work. Sounds like you have a great attitude. Take a look at the program tools over on the left. They will help you.
