I just wanted to say that it really helps me to know the extra challenges that you are going through to quit. It helps me to realize that I can/will quit too.

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

18 years ago 0 22 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi, so I have been on my quit for about 19 days and going strong. My husband also smoked-still does, but he promised to support me and not smoke around me. Instead, he has picked up the chewing habit too. He smokes when he is not around me, and when I am around, he chews. i am so frusterated. this is not what I call support. Besides smoking being smelly, nasty, unhealthy and disgusting, he has now picked up another disgusting habit. I do not even want to kiss him. I know that this is his way of "helping" me, but actually, its really made me angry with him, and I do not even want to be around him at all right now. Any advice, or am I just going to have to deal? Katy you said some things that I hadn't really thought about. You're right, this is MY quit, and I shouldn't become a hypocrite of all things. When I was smoking, I resented non-smoker nags... I am focusing on me right now and that is what I am going to have to conntiue. thank you for the insight, I appreciate it. Shevie, Thank you so much for the visuals...I showed them to my husband, and I think it may have had some impact. I told him to come closer to the pc, but he said he could see them from the kitchen, and he sees how bad chewing-"chickin'" is. I think he is a little mad a me now, though for putting him on the spot. Oh well, he can deal Thank you again, anything is a help! I just wanted to add a little tidbit. I am 50+ days into my quit and my husband still smokes. In some ways its very hard for me but in then again it makes me realize why I quit. He doesn't smoke in the house or the car either. I have made it a point not to pressure him into quitting, he will come around in his own time and if he doesn't then thats his choice, I am going to love him no matter what. I married him as a smoker and loved him them so why should that change since I have quit. Don't pressure him, it will only make him want to keep doing it more. Let him know you are there for him when he is ready. Keep him part of your quit. Keep him posted as to how well you are doing, just to show its possible, not to rub it in. I hope this helps. Good luck to you, I wish you all the best. Also maybe you could ask him to brush his teeth before he wants a kiss. I asked this of my hubby and he was very understanding. Of course sometimes he forgets but I just gently remind him that he doesn't taste good. Keep Strong. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi, Linds. All your husband has done is change his nicotine delivery system. Smoking = chewing. All he's done is trade stink for spit, lung cancer for mouth cancer. Let him know that lung cancer will just kill him. Mouth cancer will let him live with just half a jaw. Ain't it great? Here's some things for him to look at if he thinks chewing is a suitable substitute: Not a nice way to live out your life, I don't think. Just checkin to see how you are doing. Katy's advice was so right on - I was gonna say something like that, but she did it much more eloquently. This is all about YOU - you are very right to keep the focus there. This is YOUR life you are fighting for. Go for it! while what has been said is right, none of it really addressed the crux of the problem.....your problem is still "your" problem. A still addicted mate can be tough to deal with, but the success of your quit lies only with you. A quitter is most likely to feel resentful of someone who is close but continues to use nicotine. You are fighting for all your worth and he chooses to hang around and keep himself dosed up with nicotine. That is good for some really intense feelings of frustration. We have to quit for ourselves and ourselves alone. In the end it can't matter what those close choose to do....even if they blow smoke in your face, you CAN stay smoke free. (will they live?? that's another matter! LOL) You can be honest about how what he is doing is bugging you, but you can NOT harrass/shame/scare him into quitting. He will then counter with his own anger and resentment. I am wondering if you are resentful of having quit??? If so, you need to work past that to become easy with quitting. The frustrations of quitting are very real even without a user as a mate. so my advice would be to have a heart to heart and be honest,,,,but make it about "YOU" and not about him. Don't attack....if he continues to use at all times, then remove yourself when he lights up or packs in a chew. and I agree that chewing is "really" disgusting....be we are nicotine addicts. We reach a point where the delivery system really isn't important...only that we get the fix. and congratulations on choosing to quit and staying that way....no matter WHAT!! Be graceful about it to those around that are still using......smokers and chewers "watch" quitters. Show him what a successful quitter looks like. I think you will find that will have more effect on him that anything.
