COPING WITH SMOKERS....how to do it?

18 years ago 0 4 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Parola, I know how you feel. I experience the same feelings around other smokers. I found that it helps to just think about how uncool it really is although it looks so nice. I think about the stench and bad health. And also I think about how great it feels not to smoke (even after just 12 days). Also remember that a cigarette now after 10 days of stopping will not taste the same as the cigarettes that you smoked when you were a smoker. It will now taste very chemical and strong and will shock your body, can even make you feel nauseaus and give you a headache. It's just not worth it. We are over the worst I think. I also think it's good idea to stay away from places where a lot of smokers gather for a few more days. You can do it! It is *so* worth it! Anna.

Hi Parola, I have been watching for your posts...since we quit around the same time. If i were you...i would AVOID being around smokers right now. I am soooo proud that you didn't give in to smoking with your friend. That is very tough to do. I find it difficult to be around smokers as well. I could cave right now....but I won't. I would love too...but i can't. Hang in there....we can do this together. Be strong and lets protect our quit! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/29/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 12 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 250 Amount Saved: $48 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 6 Mins: 4 Seconds: 58

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

18 years ago 0 60 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi, I am now more than 10 days free ... and I can function now a little bit, I am able to work again (I am a free-lancer, mostly working at home), I can go to a shop without wanting to buy cigis, or if it comes, I can resist it ... and also there parts of the day, when I am not thinking of smoking /not smoking. Now I find it very difficult the encounters with people who smoke. there are some collegues and friends as well, and I am not in the position to avoid everyone - although I did this mostly the last days. Today a friend came along, and asked for a coffee (I also stopped with drinking coffee) and he said, he would like to have a cg with his coffee outside. I prepared the coffee (I wanted to say, I dont give you a coffee, because it is difficult for me. But it is not nice, is it?) Anyway I prepared it, gave it to him, I went outside with him, and it was extreemly difficult. I smelt his smoke - and it was a big temptation. I was thinking on that even after he left ... more than an hour, and now I am here. I realize I want a smoke if someone else is smoking more ... but I have to live with that somehow - people smoking around me How can I stay stable, and keep my quit?? Thanks, Parola My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/28/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 12 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 251 Amount Saved: $78 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 7 Mins: 54 Seconds: 34

My whole family smokes, so I had to deal with this one quick. I'd suggest telling everyone you've quit smoking, how proud you are of it, and how tough it's been. Even a smoker will understand what an accomplishment all your days smoke free are. If they're any kind of friend, they'll ask if it bothers you if they smoke around you. Then just tell the truth, in a nice but firm way. Another option, tell them you can manage to be around smoke unless you're in the middle of a craving or something. then when they ask if it's ok to light up, just tell them you're having a nicotine moment. Most smokers will understand, after all, they crave cigarettes all day, every day, right? Good luck! Parola, I don't think it would have been rude to ask your friend not to smoke. He came to your home. You have new rules at your home. Stand up for your quit, your real friends will understand. You don't have to be mean about it just tell them that you are not yet comfortable around smoke and you would rather that they did not smoke at your home (or in your car), neither inside nor outside. Keep your quit.....your life is worth it Sheila ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/4/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,936 Amount Saved: $320 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 4 Mins: 42 Seconds: 50

Great job Parola! It is definitely hard to do. It's a lot like the first time you face your other triggers - stress, after meals, finishing a task, etc. It takes a while but you'll break the association. Try seeing how absurd it looks for someone to put a flaming stick in their mouth. Squinting the eyes and surrounded by toxic fumes. My first few weeks every time I saw a friend of mine it was like she turned into a big cartoon cigarette. I couldn't be around her at all! She still smokes and I'm still not ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 613 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 12,276 Amount Saved: $2758.5 Life Gained: Days: 45 Hrs: 10 Mins: 31 Seconds: 2

There are those that think you should dig right in at the beginning and not change your patterns a bit.....I say, why make this quitting business any harder than it has to be??? If you feel threatened or weakened, or just needled by a situation, the WHY endure it? Yes, there are always gonna be those people who smoke around us...some of them dear friends.....but are you gonna continue to take a smoke break with them?? You are probably going to discover on down the road that you frankly don't like being around where people are smoking......I know I don't.....and this doesn't mean I am a ranting EX smoker..... If you are uncomfortable with smokers at the present, say so....you have a right to stear clear of it if you choose, so exercise that right. stability comes with time and your ever strenthening commitment to stay quit....rest assured that the longer you go, the easier it becomes. hang tough Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1558 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 62,332 Amount Saved: $8569 Life Gained: Days: 203 Hrs: 6 Mins: 9 Seconds: 59

Parola, Keep yourself away form the temptation for awhile until you are secure with your quit. If it is unavoidable, then have a copping mechanism on hand. Try water candy or a chew stick :) You can do this and your stats are looking great. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
