When does it get better?

17 years ago 0 140 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I can safely say that it DOES get absolutely and completely 100% better. I'm quitting for the 2nd time - 3-1/2 years ago I quit using Zyban and was smoke-free for 2-1/2 years. Although I am suffering, I know I can quit, because I've done it before. It's amazing how much I deteriorated after I relapsed. I stopped running (I was up to 30k per week sometimes), my skin looks tired and grey - I look 10 years older than I did last summer. It does get better. It will get better. Cigarettes Not Smoked

My husband and I both stopped smoking 11 days ago. I am using Welbutrin and the patch, he's going with the patch only. The first 3 or 4 days were hard, as expected. Now, after 11 days, the urges are less frequent, but much more powerful. I was a 3 pack a day smoker and quit after an abnormal chest x-ray (not cancer, but chronic bronchitis and still have more testing---COPD?) When will these strong cravings and weird dreams subside?

I'm using the patch. I take it off at night to sleep. It helps. My physical cravings slowed down during the 2nd & 3rd week. The mental cravings are still around, but I am stronger now to handle them because of the coping skills I've learned. I just keep remembering there is light at the end of the tunnel, as many of the veteran Quitters tell me. Keep reaching for the goal. Keep on keeping your quit. It's a hard journey, but your perspective and positive attitude can make it easier. Congrats on your decision to quit. It is the best decision you'll ever make. I'm using the patches and I would say the first couple of weeks I had wierd dreams and then sleepless nights, I know seem to be improving. The lack of sleep I've had doesn't seem to casue me too many problems though as I now have bags of energy and never seem to get out of breath so I'm not as tired during the day. You are doing so well at 11 days and things do get better, you will go a couple of days feeling great and then have a day were the cravings seem stronger so be prepared for them to subside and then come back with a bang. Take deep breaths and post here often - Joanne My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/3/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 31 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 788 Amount Saved: 155 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 18 Mins: 38 Seconds: 36

Hi Hurstk, And congrats on your decision to quit. When does it get better? It already is. Every day that you quit it gets better. The change is gradual and subtle so you won't really notice straight away. However, look back at the end of the first month and tell me that you don't feel better than in the first week. Then after 3 months, compare how you feel to that first month. And so on and so on. Determination alone will not get you there. You must be patient and be prepared to wait for results. It will happen! Mr Ed :) ps I still have smoking dreams. I think they happen to remind me that it isn't worth smoking. I wake up in a panic that I have lost my quit, then I'm relieved that it was only a dream! Hi hurstk, Sorry to hear about your diagnosis of chronic bronchitis. Bronchitis is a form of COPD. It is extrememly important to the health of your lungs that you quit smoking. No breath, no life. Be happy that the slavery is going to be over. Smoking is an abusive relationship. Especially with bronchitis, the only future for your lungs would be empysema, or worse. It is scary, I know; but you can do it!! Go through the program here on the site and read and read. It will help you keep your resolve to the non smoking lifestyle. Take the patch off at night and the dreams should go away. Congratulations on the best decision you could make. Let us know how you are doing. hurstk So, how is it going today? And a big congratulations on 12 days smoke free. Maybe your hubby would also be interested in doing the online program. Keep up the good quit! Lots of folks who use the patch say they have dreams...they suggest taking the patch off at night. Use the program tools over on the left. They will help you understand what you are going through and how to cope. Be sure to reward yourselves for 11 awesome days! Hurs, Welcome to our support community and congratulations to your and your hubby for quitting! It does take time for those craves to pass and they will dwindle. Take the time to be prepared for them and use any coping mechanisms that will protect your quit! Please post often and let our support group guide you through your journey! We are always here to help. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
