Cigars are made out of tabacco, and contain nicotine. So I don't see a major difference, just that cigars stink even more than cigarettes. :( But you are right, society seems to believe that smoking cigars as not really smoking. NYC has an absolute smoking ban in all bars and restaurants. However, the ban doesn't apply to the private cigar clubs around the city. Hi BFS, Good topic. Now that you mention society accepting cigars, I really dont recall any public service announcements showing anything against cigar smoking. They just cut down cigarettes. Which is rightfully so, but cigars should be included as chewing tobacco should be too. Tobacco is tobacco is tobacco. It all kills. I don't make a habit out of quoting Cuban President Fidel Castro but he once said this in response to the topic of cigars as gifts. A woman I know casually has a son-in-law who was just recently diagnosed with lung cancer. I gave my condolences, of course, and I politely asked if he was or had been a smoker, and she said "no... he just smokes cigars." I let it go and didn't say anything but to me, that just seems so blind. I've seen many people on here ask if cigars were better because you don't inhale and I'm starting to believe that society is seeing smoking cigars as not really smoking. It is my understanding that cigars are just as dangerous, if not more, but I don't think that society sees it that way. Does this bother anyone else but me? Crave the Quit! EXACTLY!!! I wish you guys could have seen this lady's face as though she were trying to figure out how on earth he could have gotten cancer! It's sad to see someone so young (in his 40s) be diagnosed with cancer, but I just feel like people are in denial here about cigar smoking. It NEVER would have occured to me to smoke cigars instead of cigarettes because they could possibly be healthier for you! I mean, if ultra-light cigarettes aren't safer, how could cigars be? I just don't get the logic. I truly feel badly for this man and his family, but I just feel like some people will NEVER understand the dangers of smoking... ANYTHING... no matter how much information is out there about it. It just makes me sad. Crave the Quit! Thanks for the bump brent... that was actually one of the posts I was talking about when I said that I've seen people wanting to smoke cigars because they thought that they might be safer, so I've read that before, but it's a good thread... thanks for the bump. Tobacco is tobacco, no matter what form it takes. Snuff, chew, pipes, cigars, cigarettes. They're all the same inside us. But since cigarettes are the most widely used form, this is the one that's gotten all the attention. Unfortunately, since the others don't get that level of attention, many people will think it's because the others are safer. There is no way a pipe or cigar user can use those products without inhaling some of the smoke. Besides, they are drawing the smoke into their mouths. It's in contact with the skin surfaces there, just like dip and chew. Some absorbtion will occur. I would have had to have taken the opportunity to gently correct this misconception. I have seen the same thing here in Texas. HELLO, tobacco is tobacco. I wish I knew the answer to convince people that tobacco is a killer. Nicotine is the drug that holds us but it is all the other stuff that finishes off the kill.
