I work in HR and deal with benefits. There is nothing wrong with looking for a new job while on STD. You should still give 2 weeks notice though, as you never want to leave another company by burning a bridge. I also advise that looking for a job while employed (but not at your actual desk) is the best thing to do, as you should never leave one job without going onto another. Not only is it unwise financially, but also looks bad on a resume if there is a gap.
Depending on your company will depend if you have to come back and work for 2 weeks or just finish your STD.
I also understand where you are coming from. I hate my job and I know it has made my depression worst. I am working on looking for a new job, but hope to be able to finish out November and early December here, as they are the busy time for my department and position.
First of all, good for you for coming here and seeking the help you need. This takes strength and courage - right now it can feel hard to do anything; yet, you are pushing yourself to take control of this. This strength is so important as it will serve you in finding relief.
How far are you along in the program? It might be helpful for you to create a schedule for yourself complete with a rewards plan to reward yourself after completing sessions and reaching goals. Take your time with each section and ensure you complete the homework. Do about a week of homework before moving to the next session.
I fully agree that it's best to look for a new job while you are still in your current job - I guess it just feels different somehow because I am on short term disability right now. But, I guess I am still officially employed, right?
I have been spending a fair bit of time poking around this site over the past couple of days. Decided to tackle the 16 week CBT program. Hopefully that'll help.
I am new here, so please bear with me as I learn to navigate this support group.
I am currently on leave from my job for at least 6 weeks due to major depression. The same thing happened a few years ago - I was off for a total of 5 months, and then returned to work up until a couple of weeks ago. My problem is that I am very unhappy at work, and I feel like it is triggering my depression. I've been looking for a new job for several months, but am having trouble finding something that will allow me to pay my mortgage (single income house).
Now that I am on leave, is it ethical for me to continue looking, with the hopes of finding and accepting a new job rather than returning to my current one? And, what would that look like? I mean, would I give two weeks' and then return to work for those 2 weeks?!
Anyone have any advice or experience to share? Would also love a professional opinion on this issue.
