Change to a new medication

Thanks Eleveno,

I've had the same crisis counselor for the past three years and since my recurrence last week, he's getting me in this week to another doctor in the hospital that he's with.  I believe that it's important to have continuity in medical care even if it's just for an annual physical and general illness.  However, I know that depending on where you live this might be difficult.

Hopefully, this doctor can get the medications changed so that I can get back to work and actually enjoying it.

HI Glen. I hope you will find a new med to help with your depression. My experience with antidepressants is short. I never was with one med for more than 3 months, maybe because I was assisted by different doctors. The result was that I have been depressed for some years now and only recently I made a bold decision to get better .

Now I would like to stick with the same doctor and try to find the right meds for me. I have tried Cipralex (Lexapro) but in my case it didn't work. I was in a low dose (10mg) and my doctor prescribed me a new med instead of increasing the Cipralex to 20mg.

Hi Glen,

I'm sorry to hear the meds you are on are no longer helping with your symptoms.  I'm sure you will be hearing from other members with regards to their experience on meds, maybe Cipralex, and how it has worked for them.

Was their anything that occurred in your life to have triggered the recent episode of major depression?

I didn't know this and just found out that a person's body can become accustomed to a specific medication rendering it no longer effective.  I've been on Cipralex for three years and for the past eight weeks have been back to experiencing significant anxiety and now another major depression.  I spoke with my therapist today (yes, he called me at home on a Sunday...awesome!) and we discussed the fact that I'm at the maximum dosage of 20mg of cipralex and that my body has probably adjusted to it, so we need to change to a new medication.  He's setting me up with a shrink on very short notice this week and taking me off work for six to eight weeks.

Do others have experience with changes in medication and/or recurrent episodes of depression after a period of doing well?

Has anyone had success on cipralex for a period of time and then changed to another medication once cipralex became ineffective?
