Perth, From watching within my family,I believe it to be true. I had an Aunt who struggled with mental illness, another delecious family secret. And through his teen and adult life her Son is displaying very dark shadows of her mental illness. The sad part is he is in denial that his Mother was ill, and self medicates with drugs and booze for all his life.

Perth, that's a great question. Members, what do you think? Is there a link between violence and genetics? Sylvie, Bilingual Health Educator

that's interesting .. logical too .. but what, if the depression doesn't come from violence (?) ... I guess I have to ask, what is the definition of violence..? You know, when you are a child, you experience some kind of breeding ... so I'm wondering, where is the border between breeding and violence.. and if that was enough to cause depression later ..(?)

In today's media reports about mental illness, there is a tendency to emphasize a supposed link between violence and mental illness. News stories regularly suggest that there is a strong connection between mental illness and crime. But the majority of people who are violent do not suffer from mental illnesses. In fact, people with a mental illness are more likely to be the victims, rather than the perpetrators of violence. Brenna, Bilingual Health Educator
