How do you repair a problem when its you

hi darkwolf! I share your pain! I just signed up for this thing and I hope it works. I have been depressed for 15 years and was on Zoloft for 10 of them. I didn't know how well they worked until I went off them! Now I am on Paxil and am at the mercy of the medically indigent program here since I have no insurance. I too am tempted to bite that bullet, every hour of every day. My only child is getting married this month and I dont want to ruin it for him, so that is keeping me around. I am afraid of what will happen after that. We just have to take it a day at a time and hope that God is listening!

Hi darkwolf, Many here have had great success with our online program which is based on cognitive behaviour therapy. CBT is only effective when you do the homework. Our worksheets help you track your homework exercises and CBT is a lot of work! As you move through the Depression Program the worksheets will change as you change. Make sure you give yourself time to do the homework properly - you know your depression best so it's really up to you to decide how often you do your homework. Take your time when you do your homework, there is no rush! Each session in the Depression Program is based on previous sessions, and if you track your mood with your Mood Tracker (and keep notes in the spaces provided) you'll see much improvement over the comming weeks. At the beginning of each session we give you a Weekly Review, which allows you to see how far you've progressed. We save your Weekly Review results in your Session Diary, so you will see a collection of results, which are all based on what you write in your worksheets. CBT is a lot of work but the good news is that if you follow the program it will all come together for you as you start to feel better. I have found the exercises in the program very practical and maybe since you are a hands on type of guy you may like it. Like you said, desperate times call for desperate measures. If you give it a chance you just might get somewhere :) which is better than nowhere. Anne

Hi darkwolf and welcome to the Support Group and DC program. You ask a direct question which I would like to try to answer in a way intended to be helpful. You ask "How do you repair a problem when its you?" It seems to me that implicit in this question itself is the assumption that "you" ARE a "problem". Now this is not me playing around with words. No, it is far too important for that. I should like to suggest that a better way of thinking would be to regard yourself as a person WITH problems rether than being a problem YOURSELF. That could give you sufficient "distance" from your problems to be in a better position to do something about them. Analogies with cars, fixing cars, mechanics etc can be very useful, but if taken too far they can become less so. You are not a car, whether a brand new one in perfect working order or a poor old wreck suitable only for the scrap heap! As far as we know cars are not in a position to place a value on themselves eg to recognise or define themselves as "brand new" or "a poor old thing"! We, however, because we are people, and not mere things, can and of course do place value and make judgements on ourselves (and others) all the time. This really is a most wonderful gift, although of course the gift has not come without cost as we with depression know only too well! You might be wonering, and with some justification, how does this help you in the slightest? Well, you were asking about the CBT program. This, as I see it, and I am only part way through, is about identifying ways that we think about ourselves and life, and cosidering whether changing some of these might result in a less painful way of living. No-one will be able to tell you whether "it", CBT or anything else, WILL work for you, you will only find out through trying it yourself. In conclusion, I should like to return to the mechanic analogy. I myself know absolutely nothing about cars, and obviously would not therefore be in the slighest position to fix them. From what you say about your work i am sure that you studied and learned what to do over many years. I would like to suggest (and this applies to me personally just as much as you) that you will need to apply the same effort and develop just the same skill when you are "working

As a mechanic i've spent alot of my life fixing things for people. Well for the last 20 years the problem has been me-i was recently diagnosed with recurrent major depression, no surprise there. The psychiatrist only wants to talk about drugs, i must admit they have kept me from putting a bullet through my temple but that doesn't make for a life. Any way i would appreciate hearing from anyone who had good results from this program. They claim it works and others claim that depression can be cured-yah and i've got a used car i'd like to sell you- i mean a quality pre-enjoyed vehicle. Everybodys got an angle is my point. But desperate times breed deperate measures so hear i am. Any thoughts?
