Why, why and why does nobody out there tell new moms that these feelings are so very normal, especially to brand new moms. Why do they always paint these picture perfect new moms in these educational books? It is just not the truth. I was a student in Amsterdam when I met my husband. I moved to the USA for him and after a year I was a 29 year old mom with twin girls. Now, it is not about the twins that made it hard, it is being a new mom which is hard!!!! But it is not done....right? It is just not done to tell anybody that you are feeling depressed, because you are supposed to be glorious happy with your brand new beautiful baby. And you are.....no doubt, but than there are sooooooo many new emotions and responsibilities and not many social contacts remained, since you are so busy with the little ones and sometimes old friends without kids may not want to hear you all the time, they have other interest. Not to mention the sleep depreviation, which can make you feel worn down and depressed. Yes, talk to you doctor, but realize that many, many new moms have those feelings. Go through them, face them, deal with them and just let them happen. Like I said, my kids are 9 now....but my depression back than was so severe that I never had another child and still remember the pain of it. If only they would prepare young women that these emotions will occur.......enjoy your babies, go with the flow, some days down and irritable, some days up and cheery. Do not worry about taking it out on your husband, that will only add quilt, of which you have enough already I am sure. Remember.............this phase will pass before you know it, soon you be driving your little ones off to school and you go back to work and you will be longing back to this time with your baby. Keep writing your posts here, a lot of people are here to support you.

Sara, Please feel free to roam the site at your own pace. If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find our Depression Test. This test is not a diagnostic tool and is not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. If you have any question or concerns with our site or please contact us at support@depressioncenter.net. We are the Support Specialist for The Depression Center and are open to any questions or concerns you may have. Also feel free to post any feeling or questions yo have for the online support group. They are wonderful individuals, with lots of knowledge and support to share. Welcome, Josie

I was so relieved to see someone write what sounded so close to what I am going through. I am a stay-at-home mom, too. I am 23 and have a 2 1/2 year old daughter, and an 8 month old daughter. I have battled with depression since adolescence, but my family was not very understanding, so I never received treatment. I never thought I needed it--I expected to "pull out of it" soon. That is until this latest bout. I haven't felt like I've had the energy to keep the house clean or play with the kids, I have to literally fight my emotions to keep from snapping at my family. Like you, I have a wonderful husband--and awesome kids! I would have problems with depression, but then wait so long to do something about it that it would get better. Then I would convince myself it was all in my head, or the problem was solved. Now I know better. Reading your post has already helped--I know I'm not alone. If you would like a email buddy on this subject, please post a reply to this message, and then I will get you my email address. Having someone to talk to would help me a lot I think. If you think it might help you too, I'd love to talk!

Thank you for your reply. I am going back to my dr. in a week and I know medication will be up for discussion again. I did pretty well on celexa for anxiety. Does that mean I would probably do well on it for depression? Also, I have heard a lot about Wellbutrin. The only thing that makes me nervous about that is that I have sleep problems and do get anxious and I am worried it will make me jittery. Any thoughts? By the way - I feel pretty dumb that I titled the discussion new "heAr" instead of "heRE" - sorry! :)

Dear newmom21, Hello and welcome to the depression center. It sounds as though you may be having some symptoms of post partum depression. I am recommending that you see your doctor immediately and let him/her know what has been going on with you. There is help out there for you. In the mean time, make use of this site. There are a lot of people here that have had similar feelings and are more than willing to help you out. Let me know how it is going. Take care, Susanne

Hi. I am a new mother of a 10 month old son. I now stay at home after 8 years of teaching high school. I love being with my son but my emotions since he was born have been a rollercoaster. Some days I am great - other days I have no energy (I am usually an active person - excersise - etc.), I cry a lot and am very irritable - taking things out on my wonderful husband. I have been on medication before - celexa and paxil at different times for anxiety. I have been off of them since I became pregnant a year and a half ago. I am still an anxious person and worry a lot - especially as a first time mom. The depressive episodes are new to me though. I have been trying hard not to go back on medication b/c I don't like how tired they make me - although being depressed is pretty tiring itself. One problem I have is that every time I say I am going to get help again - the next day and few days I feel fine - my moods are just very unstable. I want to fully enjoy my son's early years and I don't want to miss out on things. I also am having sleeping difficulties - I fall asleep but have trouble staying asleep. Any advice or support is greatly appreciated. Does this sound like major depression to you if it's not every day and I do go about my life and do things? Thanks so much.
