Opinions on Depression Studies

I went through a small journey to find the right meds. They had me on Paxil at first, but the imporvement was minimal and the side-effects were counter-productive. I was taken off of that and put on Effexor, which has been a God-send for me. There is no shame in using medicine to help deal with the symptoms. If you were diabetic, you would take insulin, right? This is no different. If the disease is chemical, it needs a chemical reaction to be dealt with. We also need to do the leg work of understanding our own behaviour (forgive me, I'm Canadian) and trying to change the way we think. If this new drug can work for you, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. The key is to keep faith that if it does not work, there is a drug out there that will. one of the most ridiculous things about depression is that it somehow manages to twist your mind into being afraid to seek help. It's almost as if it is trying to keep itself alive by scaring you out of getting help. show it who's boss. call for the study. I alwyas wanted to do one of those studies but I am already on meds and they usually wnat someone who is not being treated.

Hi CL I let my symptoms go and the illness went completely out of control. I was a mess. I am not sure about the study but just from my experience I think that some help is better than none. I was terrified at first to see a doctor. I am not big on discussing my personal issues but I got to the point where I had to see a doctor. I hope you don't get to that point. Seeing a doctor is not nearly as scary as imagining what it will be like. Hope you are okay. heather

Hi, I'm somewhat new. I'm 28 years old. I've been "dealing" with depression on and off for 5 years now. The last 6 months have been really bad. I've never gone for any kind of help, and I know that I need to. My problem is getting to that point. I have no faith in doctors and I really don't want to be on any kind of meds. I found an article in the paper requesting candidates for a study. The symptoms seem to fit me, so I thought I might be able to call and get some information. (that is if I get the courage) I was wondering if anyone else ever participated in something like this. Or if anyone had any kind of treatment other than being on medication. I don't think I can handle trying different meds until i find "the right one" because I have no support and I don't think I can bare feeling worse which I heard sometimes happens in the trial phase. Any thoughts? The study is free and very extensive...Although I don't really have all the info. I don't know if I want to be a guinea pig for something that might not be good for me. Please advise. Also, I am looking for someone to talk to through e-mail on a daily basis....or a couple of times a week...who knows what it is like to go through this. I don't really care who, because right now I have no one else. I have no family here and I am pretty much all alone. I am a very good listener and I feel that sharing experiences and thoughts is very helpful. Thanks. CL.
